Con: Closer to Wii U in power than Xbox One rendering all pros meaningless
Con: Closer to Wii U in power than Xbox One rendering all pros meaningless

You pretty much nailed it. I'd definitly show more favoritism towards Skyrim, and the launch lineup in general, at least the launch WINDOW games, but overall yeah - great looking hardware and games, with questionable online and pricing. I just need to hear more about the online cost and features before I feel alright about this aspect of the console. Also $80 for an extra pair of joycons and $70 for a pro controller is insanity.
But as a whole, this is looking to be close to Wii level of hype for me.

Yeah doesnt even matter lol. I cant understand why people are defending nintendo if its thats obvious they are making the same mistakes they made with the wii and the wii u. Im sure software support on the switch will again be dead way before ps4/xbox one software support (like wii u software support was quicker dead then ps3/xbox 360). Also the first year is extremly lacklusting, but it has Zelda (sheduled to release in 2015, first teased 2011) and Mario (4 years in development). What do people expect then? It will be the wii u situation all over again with biig gaps between games. They arnt even able to fill its launch year with enough titles and they even didnnt gave the wii u much in the past 2 years. Their big guns are fired in 2017 and new zelda and mario will likely take again 4-6 years to make. Maybe a 1 AAA title per year (like Smash, Mario Kart, Metroid, Pokemon) but that will be it. While Playstation and xbox gets 5-10 AAA games jsut in the holiday season and ~5-10 in the rest of the year... Nintendos development teams are just way to small to make enough games in HD quality. Nobody can support a console only by themselfs now a days. |
Wasn't the main joke for 2 years about the PS4 that it had no games? Or that this was the remastered generation, with ports from older consoles? The main goal of having a hybrid console is that Nintendo will only be needing to focus on ONE machine, not two - therefore, there will be a lot more games for the Switch than there were on the Wii U. The Switch also has the benefit of probably being the best selling console in Japan pretty soon, which means Japanese devs will flock to the system, which in turn will make the Switch the official sweet heart of everyone that loves Japanese gaming around the world.
As far as Nintendo games go, this will be a stellar year; Zelda, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 (old port), Xenoblade 2 and Mario. That's 4 entirely new titles for the system, and one port of a well recieved game which sold fairly well on a none-selling console. What we can expect down the road; 2D Mario, Mario 3D World 2, Pokémon Stars (it'll sell gang busters!), Pikmin, Smash, a new Mario Kart, Metroid, whatever Retro's working on, a new Donkey Kong, Luigi's Mansion, more Mario games, Fire Emblem, Yoshi games, Kirby, HOPEFULLY a GOOD Starfox (not likely though) and Animal Crossing. So there's a BUNCH of games coming for the system, something like 4 "heavy hitters" per year for 4 years to come - excluding THIS year. I can play most of PS4's games on my PC, can't do that with Nintendo games.
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
Skyrim is the remastered version on a lower setting.

So, looking through all of this, the main cons seem to be:
And, yeah, I kinda agree, but I also think its way to early to say "Oh noes, Nintendoom 4 sure this time!"
Remember, its only January.
They, and others, have promised more reveals over the next months, including things like VC and Online details, hell Reggie went out of his way to tease something, something, mother3 & metroid!
Also: There is still E3! They need to preserve something big for that! The last time they made all the big announcements early (January 2013 Direct) it ended up biting them in the ass for years. Not only was the E3 that year dissapointing due to the lack of surprises, the fact that those games werent the general layout of the next two years, but of the entire lifespan of the Wii U wasnt all that great either.
And last but not least: They are launching in March! We never expected big numbers, you pretty much cant be more off-season than that!
The true test of the Switch will be this holiday season, when it goes up against its own antithesis in form of project scorpio. By then it could have gotten a lot more games and announcements of the latter, a price drop and some neat bundles.
So I'm just gonna wait and see. I never planned on buying a switch at launch anyway, and I've got my Wii U for Zelda, so I dont need to.
I feel you, I really do, I'd like to have the guarantee that this works out and they dont mess it up again as well, but unfotunatly thats not how it works. So lets all keep calm and wait how this develops.
Dont forget: The Cons (price & games) are FIXABLE! So who knows? We could be in for a surprise!
The new guy.

Sony released the last of us, gran turismo 6, Beyoned two Souls, God of War Ascension all exclusive to the ps3 in 2013 (ps4s launch year).
Instead of delaying those games to boost their new console (what Nintendo did with Zelda, new Retro Studios games and new Mario game), they gave their loyal ps3 fanbase even in the release year of the Ps4 a great lineup.
Also exclusives Ps4 lineup in the first 2 years:
Bloodborne
Killzone Shadowfall
Driveclub
inFamous Second Son
the Order 1886
Knack

Ill be surprised if you can make such a long list of AA-AAA Nintendo exclusives.

The WiiU sold out in the beginning as well, but after all the super hard core Nintendo fans got their console, sales died down, and never really picked up again. So that's a faulty metric to discern how the masses recieved the Switch. I highly doubt that there will be a lot of none-Nintendo core fans getting the Switch the first week or two, after that, we'll see what the masses thinks of the Switch, if they even knows it exists. I think that half the Nintendo fans are loving the Switch, and have pre-ordered it, and the other half is bitching about it, but half of those still have pre-ordered it as well. Who knows why Nintendo is doing what they're doing? I'm not even sure Nintendo nows half the time. They've shown time and time again that they're not interested in delivering services that most people take for granted these days. I'm making assumtions because Nintendo refused to address them, so it's only natural that we try to fill in the blanks. The ironic thing is, that you made an assumption in that last sentence. I'm probably going to buy the Switch one day, but as it is right now, there's still a lot of unknown factors left. |
Yes I did intentionally make an assumption at the end to top off your assumption. Irony is beautiful isn't it? :P
Anyways I do understand how you feel but keep in mind that the pre-order numbers are at an all time high. We're talking sold out at EB Games and Game Stops at over 80+ per store in some locations. The Wii U did not launch with those numbers. The 2 million day once launch rumored number is looking possible. I think Nintendo has this one on lock down. Things are looking bright in the future and it appears Nintendo actually future proofed the Switch unlike the Wii and Wii U.

I have to agree with you here, leaving even well informed gamers such as ourselves to speculate and make assumptions only 1 1/2 months before actual release is ridiculous. These things need to be addressed quickly and promptly. The Xbox brand was damaged heavily by the ridiculous DRM decisions, MS backed out of these pretty quickly and certainly a long time before launch, but the damage was done. Same with mandatory Kinect, which I said from the beginning was a mistake. First impressions matter a whole lot in entertainment products, and if this thing is off to a slow start, there's little reason to think that it'll suddenly start flying once small adjustments are made. The market has become fast-paced, demanding and savage. And there's just as little reason to think that a decent debut due to pre-orders means anything in the long run, even the Wii U had a decent first week when it launched and even sold okay numbers in that first holiday window.
Pre-orders are not a good measure of actual, sustainable sales, nor is selling out in certain retailers and channels. PSVR has been sold out almost since release, does that mean it will sell like gangbusters from here on out? Of course not. Heck; the Wii U has been sold out on a few occassions as well.
Both the doom squad and the euphoria team need to take a couple of steps back and breathe slowly and lower their pulse a little until we know even more (which it's high time for, so many unanswered questions only a few weeks before launch is unacceptable). The presentation may have won over the die-hard's, but to think that the majority of gamers, not to mention "casuals", are terribly excited at this point is completely unfounded. Even the ones praising it are citing the same issues, these being price and support, first and foremost, so to think that these issues won't cause any problems is downright ludicrous at this point.

imagine the 3DS/Wii U AA-AAA exclusives on one list. Then think about the potential list that Nintendo can provide in the future with the Switch being the main console even as the 3DS drifts off into the sunset.

3DS games dont need nearly as many ressources as Wii U (let alone PS4) games. 3DS was more like a PS2 because of not as great graphics, big open worlds, voice acting and much more it was alot cheaper to make a 3ds game compared to a wii u game.
The software output will not double now, as nintendo has merged handheld and home consoles. At best, it will be a 1,5x increase over Wii U output.
Better hardware = more development ressources/time/money needed.
