Forums - Microsoft - Confirmed: Scalebound Cancelled

The game looked like crap and MS is not even trying anymore. Is anyone even surprised?

Scalebound being cancelled should mean more sales for Cuphead which is a good thing because that game actually looks original and fun unlike Scalebound which looked generic and boring.

But is it coming this year? Already seen it in like 3 E3s.

Pretty terrible news. It looked underwhelming but given the talent at the studio I was still optimistic it would end up being at least a 7/10, and given it's a JRPG, would be a much needed addition to X1's lineup.

I would say MS need to be worried, given another cancellation, the fact that Crackdown 3 seems to be progressing slowly, if at all, and because Halo and Gears aren't what they used to be, commercially or critically. But I'm not convinced they care anymore.

If the game was crap and wasn't going to review well, It would of done nothing to boost the X1 lineup. THe game wasn't going to be good better to cancel it then to release a broken or bad game that everyone will complain about and tranish Microsoft studios reputation.

My most anticipadeted game is still State of Decay 2, studios like undead labs that's were Microsfot need to spend more money.

I was talking about the idea of the game being what MS needed, a Japanese RPG from a popular, talented studio. I mean, that's all we can talk about before a game is released, it's potential. I also didn't say it shouldn't of been cancelled. You can cancel a game if it is beyond saving, but it still shows mismanagement, from MS, Platinum or both

As for tarnishing Microsoft Studios reputation, I don't think they have much of a reputation to ruin at this point.

The game is close to being finished it should come out sometime in the middle of the year.

I can't say I'm surprised. The game looked really rough last time it was shown. It would have bombed badly if it released with gameplay like that. Platinum continues its run.

The entire Xbox community definitely felt this cancellation. I hope this doesn't deter onlookers from also becoming a part of the Xbox community. Honestly, the game may have just not progressed as well as Microsoft had hoped. After the ReCore debacle (not saying the games horrible, I like it but it didn't review the way MS hoped) I feel this year they aren't open to releasing any questionable titles, especially with the resurgence of Xbox's popularity recently.

Especially with Scalebound being one of the most sought after and biggest exclusives this year they could not afford to release something that was ambitious, yet failed to execute. They still own the IP apparently, I'm sure it'll see something in the future.

This game was definitely getting expensive and taking overly long to justify the quality Microsoft was getting from Platinum most likely.

Well I can't say that I am surprise by this announcement. The game simply din't look like it was shaping up. I blame Platinum Games, they got this exclusive deal with Microsoft and just kept on taking other contract has a developer. This game was being rushed and the scale of the project was too big for the team they had working on it.

Microsoft need to acquire some independent second party studios, that are dedicated to making Xbox One games.

The lost of scale bound is a major blow to list of exclusive titles coming to Microsoft platform. But, hopefully this E3 there will be major announcement to make up for lack of exclusives in order to boost developer working on title for the Scorpio.

MS can take a risk and lose millions in ill fated games.

A small studio could die, even if they have a moderated success - Irational Games.

And there are less and less independent studio capable of outputing AAA titles.

Irational Games being shut down wasn't that big of a loss since Bioshock wasn't that original.  Team Bondi being shut down was a bigger loss L.A. Noire was one of the most original games of the last generation and the MotionScan technology used in making that game was ahead of its time.

I felt Bioshock was much more original in execution than LA Noire.

Third parties have struggled with Microsoft this gen. A huge difference from last gen. This is inevitable though as they only have about 1/2 the base of the competition so entering in a deal with them means you lose 66% of your potential market share right off the top. So QB, Tomb Raider, the mostly well praised Sunset overdrive, Titanfall crashed and burned (although this is mostly EA's fault but Microsoft chose Battlefield bundle over Titanfall), Recore, Ryse, They have a lot of work to do.
