Forums - Nintendo - Does 3D really hurt children's eyes?

You're doing exactly what a uncle/aunt is supposed to do - allow them to do stuff that their parents won't.

Regarding the real OP, I'm not aware of any real evidence that 3D causes any problems. It's just one of those things that has been repeated a whole bunch, so people start to think it's true.

Hurts mine tho I'm not a kid.

It probably does hence the age restriction... But after a certain age, the effect should be minimal I would think

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I had lassie surgery that lasted around ten years before my eye sight began to worsen. I just happened to start playing 3DS when this happened. But I also just went back to college and started squinting at the chalk board. It may be anecdotal but I have a feeling its not good for anyone's eyes. Heading tracking probably fixed some issues.

Its likely bullshit. We should already be seeing people with fucked up eyes due to 3D.

Its like the fake sugar BS, they've been saying its bad for us with no evidence.

There's no firm evidence that using 3D on the 3DS or watching 3D movies has lasting damage on children's eyes, AFAIK.

However, children's eyes are still developing up until around the age of 7. This impacts the development of the brain's visual perception (young kids sometimes still write letters in mirror image or upside-down, for example) and the development of body / eye co-ordination as eye movements become more refined.

Advising against exposing them to stuff that might 'optically confuse', and risk impairing any associated development is just a better-safe-than-sorry approach, both for Nintendo's and for the kids' sakes.

Any good parent will not take any chances with their kids' health - I kept 3D under parental controls until my youngest was 7.

To the OP - If I were in your position, knowing the age of the kids, I'd tactfully suggest to the parents that the warning only applies to under 7's, and unless there's some medical reason why they've been told not to, it should be ok for them to play in 3D.

We simply do not know. There haven't been long-term studies on the matter. Because of that, it's better to be cautious. You don't miss out on anything if you don't use 3D.

they can't rule out the possiblity that long time 3D usage could have negative effects especially on developing eyes, so they advise not to do so (to prevent charges)

if those kids only use it for a short amount (like 30minutes) a day I doubt there is any real chance of lasting damage

an article I read in a reputable science magazine said that the worst thing for eyes is reading/studying, because students often do that indoors/for hours and eyes (up until the age of ~35) need atleast 2 hours of outside sunlight (outside it's much much brighter than inside, even if you have "bright" lights or big windows) a day in order to inhibit further lateral growth of the eyeball (> myopia)

Not sure but I can tell you it hurts them when you poke them in the eye with the stylus :D

3D works by showing a different image to each word. I don't see how that can cause damage.
