Forums - Gaming - Playing Nier Automata makes me sad for the sad state of combat in Western games

Dear lord I've never seen so many stereotypes and generalizations in a single thread. There are great combat systems in both Western and Japanese games. Of course it helps that Platinum, the best in the hack 'n slash business, calls Japan home. But if you look in the right places you can find what you're looking for in Europe, North America, or Japan.

These dichotomies are so tiresome. Let's have some nuance.

I personally love the Witcher 3 has no story comment, it is the greatest comment on the internet.

If you've played enough games, it's always been like this. Japan did arpg better, while western did turn based better

I am not sure this is a western/japanese comparison.
Platinum has created the masterpiece Bayonetta and even though i am not a hack 'n' slash fan , i consider it one of the best games I have ever played.

Western combat is usually more strategic and requires more skill/forethought whereas Japanese games usually have combat that just requires button mashing.

The difference between a game like The Witcher and other Western RPG's is that you won't be seeing them flying across the room with kawaii dresses and magical powers.

Personally I like both slow and hack-and-slash combat styles. Don't see why there should be hate for either

Wait what?

Ninja Gaiden, Devil may cry, Bayonetta, Metal gear rising, Zone of the enders, shinobi.........

button mashing?

Strategic I could give you.... but thatsmore because western combat systems seem to think bombarding you with complex systems to micromange is the same as having depth......

but japanese combat systems are usually purely based on skill. the depth comes from how good you are.

Only western game that has a respectable combat system is God of War and maybe prince of persia.

I don't understand. Why would one type of game need to be like a different type of game?

Yikes! Either that dude is playing on easy/normal or my build was horribly inefficient. The game got easier near the end, but not THAT easy.

No, i played TW3 with almost all builds and its always like this. Even last boss was boring to kill :(

Geralt has WAY too many advantages in comparison to his enemies, they are basically defendless children if u only know what is hiding in the grass. Super fast, super manouver, super strenght, a lot of long range area skills, stuns blinds etc. A friend of mine has finished TW3 without magic, he just outmanouver enemies all the time. it looks so bad and stupid.

Sounds to me like what you're describing is a player who has gotten really good at the game. There  are plenty of people who blast through Ninja Gaiden and Battletoads, but that doesn't mean those games are easy or poorly designed.

I will concede that the witcher has balancing issues, eee specially when it comes to magic, but its still some of the most fun I've had with combat in a 3d game.

I really didn't think the combat in phe Witcher 3 was all that different from Dark Souls. Combat doesn't have to look flashy to be intensely satisfying and rewarding. More Automata is a Platinum game, and therefore an entirely different animal.

Care to elaborate?

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won
