A World War is very hard to imagine because of the global economy. So globalism actually does have benefits even though some people would never admit it.
Hyper-nationalism leads to things like World War II, it's a lot harder to bomb a country or start a war when you're doing billions of dollars in trade with said country.

Not really. It might start a war, but far from a world war scale. Russia right now is just not as big as they are during the Soviet era. Yes WW1 is also triggered by an assassination but at that time Europe is still a dominant power in the world. So the only country who can possibly trigger a WW is either US or China. Even the latter, despite a global leader in economy, still outclass by the US in terms of military tech.

Putin is not an idiot. He realised this is a direct attempt to prevent relations with Russia.

That network of alliances may not be as far reaching as it once was but they are still there. IMO the reason WW escalated quickly because at that time there are many european colony that spread across asia and africa so the main country and the colony are affected directly if the other one are attacked. Lets say the Brexit effect will be bigger if it happen 70 years ago because at that time British has so many colonies that would be affected by economic drop caused by brexit (just example, eu didn't even exist back then :p)
