BotW should be a Switch exclusive designed specifically for the new hardware, and it would have saved Nintendo some face by not having to walk back announcing the game for Wii U. |
but they showed the game before Wii u was even released

That was a tech demo with a totally different art style from BotW. Nintendo did the same thing before the GameCube launched back in 2000, and what we eventually got was completely different in Wind Waker. Nintendo showed some off-screen footage and a brief teaser trailer a couple years back that had people speculating whether or not Link was a girl in the new game, but BotW wasn't officially announced until this past E3, and was demo'd on the Wii U as opposed to the new hardware which everyone already knew was in the works and was all but officially announced at that point.
With new hardware just around the corner and the game still not ready for launch before the end of 2016, announcing it for the Wii U first became a moot point.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
