Forums - Gaming - Whatever happened to the used games problem that was destroying the industry?

I remember used games were the reason the gaming industry was being destroyed last gen, prompting publishers to add online passes and all sorts of other limitations to force people to buy new or pay them a free. Yet this gen suddenly there seems to be no talk of used games being a problem or any kind of online passes. So are publishers happy with used games now? What's the cause of the sudden change of attitude towards the biggest epidemic that was supposedly plaguing the industry last gen?

Sony said "lets just allow people to borrow to others, like they have always been allowed".
And their around 370m sold in software.

Its just greed..... MS wanted it gone, really badly start of gen.

So what happend?

Sony protected your rights, as a gamer, and today you can still enjoy used games if you want too.

Sony had online passes last gen though. Publishers also stopped using them before the PS4.

Digital sales picking up happened.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

They just put more content into account-bound DLCs and less content into the main game.
If you sell your used game, the buyer has to buy that DLC content again, if he wants to play it while you lose access to your unsellable DLC-content.

Problem solved for the industry profits.

Micro transactions to the rescue! No, I think, just as with piracy, the issue was heavily overstated. As with piracy, the biggest and richest studios complained the most about this. I think that the industry as a whole have also finally started to adapt properly to the consumers and let them dictate policy instead of fear and greed, companies like CDProjekt and their GOG service have been paramount in setting the precedent for kinder and more trusting treatment of end users.

Digital distribution also plays a huge role in this, of course.

^ That happened.

But if Publishers want to combat used games all they really have to do is lower digital prices. Digital is already gaining traction.

I actually agree with your first sentence. Microtransactions have become a pretty significant part of games, especially those with multiplayer.

I aslo agree with the impact of used game sales was exagerated.

That has nothing to do with the OP.

If anything, that shows Sony didn't really care about the impact of used game sales.

Digital

I know the majority of sales are physical, but I honestly don't know anyone that has bought a physical game for PS4 or XBO. Probably mostly comes down to living in Washington state and everyone having 100Mbps internet. So I would say digital has made a major dent in the used games market. With the value of digital games being so much higher, and the increased engagement from nearly all games being online, I think a lot less people consider trading in games now than they did in the past.
