Micro transactions to the rescue! No, I think, just as with piracy, the issue was heavily overstated. As with piracy, the biggest and richest studios complained the most about this. I think that the industry as a whole have also finally started to adapt properly to the consumers and let them dictate policy instead of fear and greed, companies like CDProjekt and their GOG service have been paramount in setting the precedent for kinder and more trusting treatment of end users.
Digital distribution also plays a huge role in this, of course.
