Forums - Gaming - What happened to the Def Jam franchise?

Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam Fight for New York are two of my favorite games from the PS2/Xbox era....I was looking forward to the next installment on the PS3/XB 360 yet all we got was the trash that was Def Jam Icon then after that....absolutely NOTHING.....where did EA go wrong with two IMO good games and move on to trash in Icon and WHY?

Did anyone else enjoy the Def Jam games? Would you buy remasteres or remakes of these games for the PS4/XB1? Could EA revive the franchise and do it right and take it back to how it was on PS2/XB? Or is this just a lonely dream of a single gamer lol.

Rap went soft. None of these rappers today seem tough enough to fill out the roster. What would you have Drake vs. Tyga? Don't make me laugh.

I loved the Def Jam games, I even loved the Wu Tang game. I think the issue wasn't the budget as much as it was EA trying to do something new with the whole remix thing. I think they tried to mix fighting and DJing or something and screwed everything over.

Secondly, I think Hip Hop and Rap as a whole has died down a bit. Pop rules all at the moment.

A Def Jam game woukd mostly work if they brought back the golden age of Rnb and Hip Hop with the cast and music with some new guys.

You kinda answered the thread's main question yourself. Development costs go up, trash is released, sales falter as a consequence, IP gets abandoned.

Yeah but they abandoned it after one game on PS3/XB 360. And that game wasn't even really Def Jam it was like they just took some random idea and said yeah let's forget what we did that amde the first two games good and go with something else all together....I was like REALLY....what a waste smh

I agree and if they wanted to do something different....heck stick with the original controls add in a little more depth...maybe make like a specific track play for when each artist does their finishers or special moves. Like if they had Kanye West go to the "No one man can have all this power" line as he executes his move or something....it could be cool. But EA is so far gone now I don't know if they could pull it off.

EA wrecked Dead Space too. Company wants more sales, so changes need to be brought in. More often than not the changes fail to convince a larger audience while at the same time they put off the existing fans. Since the more convenient solution is to blame the audience ("the market doesn't want the IP anymore"), the death of an IP is more likely than a resurrection.

You are RIGHT I forgot they also wrecked Dead Space......dang it EA just failing all around lol.

You have to remember the cost associated with all the music rights. A game like that will not happen again for a very long time.

But we still get Rock Band and Guitar hero...plus just dance and dance central games......it is crazy smh.
