Forums - Gaming Discussion - Phil Spencer: "I'd Love to See Mario on Xbox"

Well, that's like EA saying they would love to have Grand Theft Auto on Origin. Of course they do, it's friggin' Mario, it's a license to print money. xP

Dear Microsoft, please allow emulators on Xbox One and you have more Mario games than on any other console.

I think they would if it would be that easy. But it would get them into a whole lot of trouble and it would damage any possible relations to Nintendo for good. Nintendo doesn't like emulators. They can't stop them on PC and when it comes to Homebrew, they can however very well stop them in closed systems. Thank god for Henkaku all that goodness finally on Vita!

And it's a shame that the chinese found a backdoor to the PS4 but decided to give the info straight to Sony instead of the scene. =/

Anyway, drifting away from the topic here!

Yeah sure make it happen but only if halo ds is revived in some way shape or form

All they have to do is make their Xbox run in iOS and Android and Super Mario Run will be ported to there as well.

Fixed it for you

Are we going full console wars now? And no, you didn't fix it. You can disagree, of course.

Yes. all Xbox fans are stupid and should bow down to nintendo. They(nintendo) are the gem of humanity, the ones we should admire and give our money to.

Anyone who doesn't is a peasant that shall be forced to play mobile games for eternity

People saying nintendo is doomed don't look at the complete picture. Even if nintendo drops out of the hardware race, they'd make a Killing by releasing their games on other platforms like xbox, playstation, steam, etc.

That would diminish their IPs. Nintendo always has made their games with the hardware it was made for very specific in mind.  This would take that away and having to worry too much about running well on so many platforms. They would also stop making games like Xenoblade or Fire Emblem. What people joke about them just making Mario and Zelda would come true. Only making the big ones and well Metroid barely does well on Nintendo systems and would just be a dead IP otherwise.  SEGA is the only one who can rival Nintendo in IPs  and what happened to them is a good reflection what would happen to Nintendo.  Nintendo's hardware is also important to the industry. For all the innovations they had. Also that little fact they were the first console to sign Unity.  Sony and MS are stagnating the console industry by selling essentially under powered PCs. Something like Switch offers something different.  Diversity is needed and Nintendo is needed in hardware.

Would he really? Such a difficult thing to believe that he would love to see a game from the most well-known and best-selling video game franchise of all time on his company's console.

Mario on Xbox almost became a reality when Microsoft first proposed a buyout of Nintendo. But when Microsoft made known that Nintendo was to cease hardware production, Nintendo back out of the potential deal. Otherwise, we would have seen a Mario game on the Xbox. Look on the bright side. Competition is good for the industry.

False. Never became a almost reality. MS wanted to but Nintendo was never going to sell(not even sure Japanese Gov would allow it). Nintendo never had interest. During that era Nintendo said they would never leave the hardware business unless they were bankrupt(it's in a interview with one of my old Gamenow Magazines). They wanted to also buy SEGA esp considering Xbox was nearly BC with all DC games as DC used Direct X 6 and Win CE and nearly had VMUs. Instead they settled on some exclusive games MS would publish. NoA of the time thought it was a joke and laughed it off. Yamauchi at best entertatined MS to get a look inside someone who wants to compete with them but there was never any chance Nintendo was going to sell.

There never was any deal on the table for MS to buy Nintendo. Yes Moore said MS wanted to. However magazines like EGM speculated there were deals and over the years that turned to rumor and rumor turned to false facts people spread. It was never going to happen. You have to remember Nintendo had no plans to exit the hardware business,in fact they attempted to strengthen it. They wanted all the rights to Harry Potter games for Gamecube. They nearly did buy Namco but 4 years later settled for buying Monolith Soft from Namco. Not to mention all the arcade hardware using GCN architecture like Triforce. No,Nintendo wanted more of their hardware out there. They even believed GCN only real competitor was the GBA.

I agree on this, but I also think that it's a no-brainer that anyone would want a piece of that Nintendo pie. Nintendo has two of the best selling franchises of all-time and they may be a helluva price point for anyone, even Microsoft and Sony. These two franchises alone are trendsetters in pop culture and are still relevant (arguably more relevant than ever) today. Then you got other respectable IPs such as Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Smash Bros., Fire Emblem, and Animal Crossing along with other IPs that have come around and about once in a while like F-Zero, Kid Icarus, Punch Out, Chibi Robo, Pikmin, Star Fox, etc. and new IPs like Xenoblade (though technically part of the Xeno series as a whole), Splatoon, Pushmo, Wonderful 101, etc. That's a lot of IPs alone. Then you got the talent (young and old) in the software and hardware depts.

But as you mentioned, Nintendo can still benefit from having their own platforms available for their biggest games. This provides them more opportunities to utilize their other IPs when able, they can create and not worry under the pressure of the heads of other companies, and they tend to be quirky with how they utilize the hardware with software, which is who they are. They are not just great software developers but they also like to experiment and try something different. Not sure if they could do that under another head looking over them as a third party developer. If they were to be a third party dev, they would want the freedom to do whatever they like and utilize their respective consoles differently instead of just doing conventional things all the time (of course you would see the Zeldas, the Marios, and the Pokemons with their recognizable formulas with a few shake ups). Again, Nintendo is Nintendo, they've done quirky things since the beginning. I mean, they initially marketed the NES as a "toy" with the ROB accessory. They had a variety of accessories throughout all their consoles (and handhelds).

You are definitely not the only one, Mr. Spencer.
