well i love my tomb raider and look forward to getting the game over the holidays, i'll be looking out for when it drops to £20 in a chrimbo sale

This just further proves that money-hatting is a significant risk. There's no way Microsoft paid enough money to SE to compensate for this level of sales decline. The release dates chosen were also the definition of insanity, this isn't the 1990s, TR is not a major franchise, and with moves like this, never will be. I don't feel like wasting time looking it up, but the mass majority of TR2013 sales were bargain sales, as that thing hit the discount pile in a flash.

Personally I'm not too bothered by it, I am neither pro-Xbox or pro-PS. I have mostly given up on consoles. But TR reboot seems weirdly devoid of personality to me. I struggled mightily to get into the TR2013 game after getting it for free, and it just seemed like forced torture porn heavily interrupted by constant QTEs. Needless to say, after seeing that ROTTR looked like a continuation of this formula, I would have skipped it regardless.

As a business though, it just seems patently idiotic to take a game obviously meant as a multiplat, and seal off potential buyers of it. Part of the attempt to build a franchise involves growing word-of-mouth and fans on every possible system that makes sense. They are more likely to come back that way. But things move FAST, if you skip a major console, LET ALONE the dominant global console, then your next release may not come out of the gate very well. Good reviews won't save you if there is no hype/excitement. This is the same thing that is killing TF2 despite excellent reviews, combined with YET ANOTHER utterly insane and stupid release date sandwiched between the COD and BF phenomenons. You want TF2 to sell well EA? HOW ABOUT RELEASE THE GOD DAMNED THING IN MARCH/APRIL AND NOT TOSS IT INTO THE ABYSS OF THE HOLIDAY JUGGERNAUTS?

We'll have to see if SE actually gives this franchise one last shot, cause they just screwed up so shortly after the relaunching the brand. They basically gave the middle finger to the audience that has given them the largest number of sales. My guess is they realized it when preorders were poor, which led to the first time ever, that I can recall, a company actually announcing the terms of their exclusivity deal and the launch date of the console its not launching on BEFORE the game even hit shelves.

Unfortunately for series, the damage was already done. It sold below expectations on the XBO and there were discounts on it quickly after it released. Now, it's probably going to see the same discounts on the PS4 port in a short while. I can guarantee this will be the last time this gen SE accepts a money hat from MS.



The poor sales can be attributed to three main factors. It's a one year late port at full price, a big part of the fan base was basically put aside intentionally, and it's a competitive season.

I doubt Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix didn't see the potentially poor sales (and quick sale prices) coming. I imagine most people will pick this up when it has a standard price of $30 or less, and after the holiday season once they bought prioritized newer releases.

I'll be picking up my copy when I have my Pro and when it's $30 or less.

Just like Street Fighter 5 needed to crash and burn to show Capcom without X1 it would not be successful.



$60 MSRP for a year old game?

Most of the people who waited a year to play Rise appear to be content to keep waiting until it's appropriately priced. $30 is appropriate. Wouldn't be surprised to see it for $30 on Black Friday.

My guess is that SE made the "timed, console exclusive" deal with MS shortly before the lay of the land was set with regards to marketshare. If not, then MS brokered a great deal to sell a handful of XBOs at SE's expense.

What this may mean on a practical level is that the "timed, console exclusive" model, which is a fairly ridiculous marketing concept to begin with, is either on its way out (no longer of value to developers unless the title in question is heavily subsidized to make up for lost sales/revenue), or is a marketing strategy that should only be taken if done on the platform with the dominant marketshare.

Incidentally, I wouldn't be surprised if the $60 MSRP was a result of the mediocre sales on the XBO, due to the size of the consumer base more than the demand or quality of the product, in a weak attempt to recoup losses through the PS4 consumer base.

So yeah; PS4 owners shouldn't support subsidizing mediocre sales of a game on another platform a year later, but people are naturally free to spend their money as they wish.
