Because they don't want people to use it in the first place, but need a search bar to make it look modern

I like to imagine all those little dwarves inside VGC servers frantically leafing through huge human leather-bound registers.   

Maybe drop all the fricking ads and you might have a semi functional website. Not sure who's in charge of the brain trust here anymore but it's as backwards as an website I've ever been to. Makes no sense to alienate your faithful, loyal posters for a few bucks while completely decimating any possible new readership.
