Forums - Nintendo - Emily Rogers: 3D Mario on Switch has more exploration than 3D World and Galaxy

My main issue with 3DW is that as polished as it was, it felt terribly uninspired.
Not once when playing it did I get that "oooh, that's so cool/clever" feeling that I got often when playing 64 or Galaxy 1/2. Levels were composed of simple building blocks with very few moving parts or dynamic elements, there were no real surprises, nothing so memorable as finding an underwater lake with a giant plesiosaur in it in Mario 64 or climbing a planet-sized giant robot in Galaxy.

See I can see that complaint for 3D Land but I felt plenty of immagination and energy in 3D World.  I found the final boss level very fun and entertaining.  And I'll e blunt: I find the power up system of 3D World superior by a huge margin to Galaxy, Sunshine, and 64.  In those games, power ups are so contextual, in Galaxy they're most just a flavor of the day gimmick to get you through a level specifically contrived to necessitate that power up.  Whereas in 3D World, power ups are extensions of your abilities that open up new approaches to levels and possible altternate routes.  I really, really hope the new 3D Mario's power ups follow that structure and use it to create sophisticated levels that take advantage of the possibilities with alternate routes and and exploration.  That would be my ideal 3D Mario.

I wouldn't mind if World's powerup system was retained. It was more 3D World's simplistic levels I took issue with. It was kinda depressing that a flagship Mario in 2013 had less scope than one released in 1996.

as long as its not a collecthon...those get real boring imho

I don't want to say that this sounds terrible, but this sounds terrible. Leave exploration out of Mario an inside of Metroid and Zelda where it belongs. SM3DW had some of the best level design in the series, and definitely better level design than every 3D Mario put together. Please don't mess up a good thing.

Screw scope. This is Mario, not Skyrim.

So are you really trying to say that this

Looks to you like a level design more similar to this:

Than to this?

Ok then.

As much as I don't want to have to agree with Goodnightmoon, I agree with Goodnightmoon.

What was shown was very clearly a hub world with NPCs in one picture, and a very linear SM3DW-like level in the other.

That's not to say there won't be explorable M64/Sunshine-like open levels, it's never too late to ruin a good thing, but what was shown does not showcase that at all.

EDIT: I'm obviously joking about not wanting to have to agree with Goodnightmoon, incase you're an idiot.

Tbh, I think that was shown is way more similar to a SM3DW level than a 64 level. The main difference is the camera position, but make it isometric and magic is done xD. You'd have a linear level from 3DWorld. I'm talking about that Bullet Bill screenshot.

I can't shake the feeling that scope in a Mario game always result in a less inspired level design. Probably because they focus in more aspects of the game, instead on what make Mario games fun. I mean, SM64 is fun, and it was quite an achievement back in those days, but level design is... worse in every aspect to 3DW, which feels way more varied and fun in the end. I know it's not the most popular opinion but, still, that's the way I see it. More open Mario games is always bad news for me. I'll give them a chance to prove me wrong if that's true though.

Its kind of stupid to argue over if the 6 seconds of footage we have from the new Mario is more like Mario 64 or 3D World.

It could just as easily be a mixture of both styles or something completely different, its 6 fucking seconds guys!!!!!!

I'm hoping for a hybrid myself.  More open levels but still more distinctly platforming-focused structure to them.  So the Stars would be like various exits to the levels, you can pursue any you wish.  But rather than an almost Banjo-Kazooie approach of just open spaces, you would have defined platforming paths to each.  And each path could also have alternative paths that you could reach or take via powerups or skilled use of Mario's move sets.  This would require a very deft hand in level design, but it could be pretty impressive if accomplished.

Mario64 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Everything else 3D Mario.
I came here just to say that.
Galaxy and 3D World are still great though.
