Forums - Gaming - Good games that still got slammed by fans.

I've been thinking a lot lately about games that were technically good, but still got slammed by fans because they weren't exactly what they wanted.  Final Fantasy X-2 and Metroid: Other M come to mind for me.  X-2 was technically a good game, but it still got slammed by fans because of the whole "Magical Girl" theme and cheesy story.  Yuna went from being a nun in the first game to a scantily clad pop princess in the second, and fans weren't too thrilled.

And say what you will about Metroid: Other M, but I thought the gameplay was solid enough.  But still, fans hated the fact that it wasn't the more traditional Metroid experience of exploration and discovery.  Instead, Other M was more of an arcadey action game,  and while the gameplay was fun, it was admittedly shallow.  Fans weren't happy with the end result.  I also think people generally just hated the story, and how weak and vulnerable Samus came across in the game.

Can you guys think of any others?  You can post whatever views you like as well.  You can take the side of the game or the side of the fans.  Was the hate justified or not?  Your call.

The gameplay in Other M was not "solid enough." It was bad. People didn't hate Other M because it was different. Metroid Prime was different, but that game was good so people still give it a pass. People hated Other M because it sucked. The gameplay sucked. The story sucked. The level design sucked. The controls sucked. Metoid: Other M was a bad game, and because it is a Metroid game instead of shovelware, people were offended by just how bad it was.

The obvious right answer would've been Wind Waker, but people have since come to their senses so it's not really "slammed" anymore. I genuinely can't think of a game that's slammed by fans unjustly. Really, it's just the opposite that happens. Fans often praise mediocre or bad games. Like Sonic Adventures 1&2.

Around the Network

Zelda 2 - I admit that this game is really no REALLY hard to get into the game is extremely difficult and you almost never know where the hell to go because you're missing an item or something, what fans mostly hate about this game is that it's too different from all other Zelda games. This game rarely if not never gets a mention in top 10 Zelda games. I finished it with a YouTube walkthrough it's actually a good game but at times frustrating.

Star Fox Adventures - When this game launched people seemed to like it for its graphics and tight controls but over the years it got so much hate. I agree it's not a Star Fox game and it could have worked better as Dinosaur Planet the game it should have been. But is it a bad game? Hell no, it's a great and fun Zelda clone. (which is alright)

Metal Gear Solid 2 - Trust me someone should mod this game and replace Raidens entire existence with Snake and even if the plot doesn't make any damn sense fans would've loved this game even more than MGS3. Because that's really the sole reason why eveybody hates this game, Raiden. I agree he's not as manly as Snake and the story was pretty weird near the end but does that ruin all the fun out of the game? Fuck no, it's awesome and BETTER than MGS3 fuck yea I said it.

MGS Twin Snakes - Now this one I'm not really sure of. Back when it released fans actually liked this game tho there was some whining from Sony fans over how it should have been a PS2 game company betrayal whatever but not much else. However over the years all of a sudden everyone complains about the game not being directed by Kojima and over the top cutscenes the latter which I believe started with a YouTuber review. How do a few cutscenes make the game bad? It was a pretty faithful remake of the original running on MGS2 engine tho I will always prefer the original MGS it's just better. Twin Snakes is a Solid game.

Ace Attorney Justice For All - This game is another of those "the original game was so good so I expect it's sequel to be everything the first game is but more and better!" victims. Justice For All is not a bad game in the slightest the problem is that the characters weren't as iconic as the first game everybody's problem with this game it that Circus case which I admit was tedious to go through at times but I still liked it a lot actually. Justice for All is so much better than piece of shit Dual Destinies!

Ace Attorney Apollo Justice - What!? Phoenix Wright is not the protagonist anymore!? I hate this game!! That's what I summarize from most fans they just keep bringing up Phoenix. Being honest Apollo Justice IS one of the weaker games of the series (still better than Dual Destinies) but it was not actually bad. It had some predictable cases and few likeable characters I sure did like Apollo and Trucy and wished the series would've moved on from Phoenix so Apollo could follow in his footsteps and guidance and become a master attorney. But nope! the sales didn't improve so they has to throw back Phoenix in the protagonist shoes and mess up the plot good thing Shu Takumi moved away from the main line and focused his work on the Great Ace Attorney!

Metroid Fusion - When this game released it was overshadowed by Metroid Prime and pretty much hated simply because it was linear and had "too much" dialogue. I agree that it's not Super Metroid but Fusion is one of my favorite 2D Metroids and I prefer it over Zero Mission I mean seriously it actually has a plot and it gave Samus some characterization. Oddly enough after Other M, fans actually came to appreciate Fusion, so much that theyre hoping for Metroid 5 the follow up to Fusion.

Metroid Other M - This is the boldest game Nintendo has ever made: voice acting, different controls, different gameplay, story hand in hand with gameplay, heavy focus on cutscenes, high quality graphics, protagonist that speaks her own mind in other words the MATURE game Nintendo fans had always wanted from Nintendo only to find out that they really dont know what they want. Everybody had something to criticise about this game voice acting (which I agree on Samuss part) controls, not Metroid Prime, no exploration you name it. We've all beaten this horse to death but let's remind ourselves ( and the Metroid fanbase) that what fans really hated about this game was the portrayal of Samus... It's amazing how everybody had a different image of a character who has never had a personality in the first place.

I can definitely understand some gameplay frustrations but overall Other M is a fantastic crafted game which deserves much more love and recognition one of the best not really Metroid but Metroid games out there!

The inmediate game that comes to my mind is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Fantastic game, one of my favourite videogames of all time, but one that also got an extremely harsh reception despite the critics universal acclaim and being the best-selling game of the franchise. It eventually got the delayed appreciation it deserved, through years of internet discussion and the HD remaster popping up, which also made people rethink what they thought of the game.

I'm a bit suprised that more people haven't brought up MGS2, maybe it still has a bad rep on forums after all these years. More often that not when I hear about MGS2, instead it's about Raiden and nothing else, which is a real shame. While MGS3 is one of my favourite games of all time (although MGS2 isn't that far behind), MGS2 introduced a lot of features that later games in the series take for granted and not to mention the gameplay in MGS2 is a leap from MGS1.

I can sort of understand the backlash for Metroid Fusion, it's quite a radical departure from the previous games. But overall I enjoyed the game for what it is, the focus on combat and story was executed pretty well and the bosses were great. Zero Mission and Super Metroid rank higher on the list, I like the exploration and speed aspect more but Fusion deserves a chance. Best of yet it manages to keep that "Metroid feel" despite being so different, something that a certain other game struggles with.

Agreed. Doesn't deserve a fraction of the criticism it cops.

I think so. Side quests are top notch. Gameplay is better than 2. Sure, the end is a bit shitty, but the game is for than just an ending. Tbh, what I like the most about ME series is character development. In that regard, 3 is the best.

I am not going to pretend that I loved the ending, but it wasn't nearly as illogical as people claimed.

The whole trilogy was about suicide missions, and the Reapers whole message was basically 'you are irrelevant and the choices you make are moot in the end.'

Then everyone gets offended and outraged when the choices they make are largely moot in the end

Star Fox: Assault is the only one to come to mind. Probably not as hated as the new game, but it seems like I find very few people who enjoy it. The arcade elements were fun...and the multiplayer is probably my favorite in the series (not that it has much competition).

Can't think of much else. Normally the games I like are either divisive or have somewhat of a following. Rarely are they universally hated.

Super Paper Mario. This is honestly the direction PM games should take if they want to truly move away from PM64 and TTYD.

GTA 5, when it launched some people criticized for... reasons... I can´t find a single flaw in that game but leave it to the internet...
Also, MGS5 is a fantastic game and the mimimi crowd also found stuff to complain about.
But, to me, the grand prize goes to one of my favorite games, SILENT HILL4: THE ROOM.
It is a amazing game and people bash it to pieces.

The fact that GTAV had a bug that prevented me from playing any more of the story beyond the four first missions is a pretty big part of the reason why I disliked GTAV....

Gaining AP at the cactuar island is actually faster than at other normal battles and more AP earlier is not needed because the game is very easy this way. Besides, if more AP is needed you get Seifer very early and bosses give APs too.

The problem with EXP is that I think that a good game must be fun to play when you're playing to win. Yeah, complete lack of balance is another problem FF VIII has.

That's the thing. VIII is fun while playing to win. Enemies escalate just so that there's always a constant sense of challenging, in the same vein your characters level up and become stronger; at no point the game gets unfair (especially not if you take into account Junction/Refine) except for, perhaps, Omega or Ultimecia. The only complain I can get from not wanting to level up is that you want the game to become a breeze at one point, rather than keep the difficulty throughout. It's the same principle that other games have applied, like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. It's not a bad concept at all, unless, yeah, you want the game to become extremely easy at one point.

All Final Fantasy games feature lack of balance at one point or the other. VIII's only issue is that it takes easier to get there than the rest, but that's pretty much it.

Killing any enemies I find is my path is not playing to win in Final Fantasy VIII. Playing to win is doing whatever you can within the game's rules to win. If then the game sucks the blame should be on the rules and those who dictated said rules. Am I supposed to know before playing it that the game will become a breeze if I do my best?

It's like the last time refueling was allowed in F1: Due to advancements in tech since the last time it was allowed, teams were able to know when a car was going to stop to refuel, so whenever their car got close to another car, if said car was going to pit earlier, the team ordered their driver to wait until the pit stop of the car before them and then push to overtake it with strategy rather than take risks and waste time fighting on track. This made races boring to watch due to the lack of action on track. Should I blame teams and get angry at them for for doing their best to win? No, they're doing what they're supposed to do. The problem was refueling.

When FF V or IX became as unbalanced as VIII?

Would it be fine to you if the next Dark Souls got harder the more souls you collect? That would be pretty much the same.

EDIT - Trivia time: Omega is always level 100 (at least on PSX), so leveling doesn't make it harder.
