| Paperboy_J said: I've been thinking a lot lately about games that were technically good, but still got slammed by fans because they weren't exactly what they wanted. Final Fantasy X-2 and Metroid: Other M come to mind for me. X-2 was technically a good game, but it still got slammed by fans because of the whole "Magical Girl" theme and cheesy story. Yuna went from being a nun in the first game to a scantily clad pop princess in the second, and fans weren't too thrilled. And say what you will about Metroid: Other M, but I thought the gameplay was solid enough. But still, fans hated the fact that it wasn't the more traditional Metroid experience of exploration and discovery. Instead, Other M was more of an arcadey action game, and while the gameplay was fun, it was admittedly shallow. Fans weren't happy with the end result. I also think people generally just hated the story, and how weak and vulnerable Samus came across in the game. Can you guys think of any others? You can post whatever views you like as well. You can take the side of the game or the side of the fans. Was the hate justified or not? Your call. |
The gameplay in Other M was not "solid enough." It was bad. People didn't hate Other M because it was different. Metroid Prime was different, but that game was good so people still give it a pass. People hated Other M because it sucked. The gameplay sucked. The story sucked. The level design sucked. The controls sucked. Metoid: Other M was a bad game, and because it is a Metroid game instead of shovelware, people were offended by just how bad it was.
The obvious right answer would've been Wind Waker, but people have since come to their senses so it's not really "slammed" anymore. I genuinely can't think of a game that's slammed by fans unjustly. Really, it's just the opposite that happens. Fans often praise mediocre or bad games. Like Sonic Adventures 1&2.
