Forums - Gaming - Go on the Record: Video Game Power

Ok... having read through this thread something sticks out.

Some care about power but reasonably. Some dont and instead care about good or innovative gameplay more than anything else.

Which makes me wonder, so where are the people that champion PC gaming for ultimate performance and pixels. Where are those that nitpick over 1080p PS4 and 900p XB1? Where are those that write off the PS4pro as being faux4k and champion the scorpio and it's true 4k to change console gaming for ever.

Are they just not posting in this thread?

I wish they would! What I love about the responses so far here is that they're totally honest. I might not agree with them but I can understand and appreciate them.

So let's get more honest answers! Be proud of what you like!

It still blows my mind that that game was running on a SNES. Insane.

I've never played it, though. XD

You've never played the original Doom? or the SNES version of it you mean? surely, I wouldn't even know where to start with what version of the original game to play if you haven't ever enjoyed it... I think I have it pretty much in every variation GBA/SNES/Saturn/32X (don't even own the addon, just had to buy the game) N64/X360/PSone Just... such a good game, I once done a side by side of the Saturn to GBA version of the game just to compare them framerate wise... ya know, obviously the GBA version was So much smoother to play, while graphically inferior the frame rate of the saturn game just makes it borderline unplayable and the saturn itself sounds as though it is about to die trying to render the game

Nope, I'd actually never played any Doom game prior to picking up DOOM this past Summer. I've played a lot of classic shooters, but somehow never got around to playing the father of them all.

But man, I get what you mean about the Saturn version. I feel like I'm about to throw up just from watching a few minutes of that. The GBA version looks great, though. The sound is particularly impressive. I remember most GBA games having kind of cruddy sound, especially when compared to the SNES, but Doom GBA holds up pretty well. I might have to try that out... I also see Ultimate DOOM on Steam. Is that the same as on SNES/GBA? It looks a little different to my eyes.

I don't care about power but as in any craft, you have to be aware of the advancements being made in your field. Nintendo says they don't care about being powerful but there was a time where it was the most powerful 16 bit device and 64 bit gaming device.

Still, with every Nintendo console I don't ever feel like "this game could look better" when I play a Nintendo game because the style is solid. So to reiterate, I could care less about the power of a console or how many polygons and texture resolutions/etc. it can push. I just want games that know what the want to be/do for the industry.

Do you have a PS3, Trunkin? That has Doom Classic Complete, which includes Ultimate Doom (expanded version of Doom), Doom II, Master Levels for Doom II, and Final Doom. Great collection.

It should also be on Steam.

I don't own a PS3, but my brother owns one, so I could always borrow his. Ofcourse I do prefer to play on PC whenever possible. I just looked it up, and they do have it on Steam for $15, and isthereanydeal.com says it has been as low as $3.74. I'll definitely be looking into buying it this coming Winter sale. I also just checked out some videos of Doom II. It looks sick! I don't understand why I never considered buying the rest of the series until just now.

Here's my stance and it doesn't change:

I want the best experience possible. Sometimes that's better multiplayer, better controller, better performance, or even better resolution.

Certain franchises, I always buy on one console brand. Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Dead Space, and Metal Gear will always be "PlayStation franchises" to me. Call of Duty, Dead Rising, Saints Row, and a few others will always be Xbox franchises to me.

When it comes to power, I don't care.

For me, everything Wii and lower are one tier.

Wiiu, Xbox and PS3 were damn near identical most of the time. I couldn't tell if anything was 1080p, 720p, or whatever. Didn't care. They looked sharp on my 1080p Vizio so I was happy.

Vanilla Xbox One and Vanilla PS4 are also fairly close in my opinion. I've played the same games on both and noticed almost no differences (ie Tomb Raider Definitive Edition). I think the frame rates are different but if you put one on my TV and didn't tell me which, I wouldn't know.

I just got a 4k UHD TV yesterday (2016 49 inch Sony Bravia). I didn't notice the huge improvement over 1080p until today. I think it updated overnight or something. After toying with the settings, i played Gears of War 4 and RotTR on Xbox One and Until Dawn and Tomb Raider on PS4. Both console displays looked absolutely incredible and comparable in power.

Tl;dr (or maybe I just didn't make myself clear. I ramble a lot.): I want the best experience possible but I often don't notice or care aboutthe difference.

For years, I preferred WiiU to both Xbox One and PS4. I just like what I like.

The only thing you need to get used to is there is no Verticle aiming at all, so if there is an enemy on a layer above you the character will auto shoot the gun to hit it, only really comes into play with things like the rocket launcher where the shot is visible in the air as it flys up to the level it needs to go to, but yeah the Classic doom games which came packed in with Doom3 remastered on the X360/PS3 which is what Veknoid is talking about here are the best way to play them I think.

And yeah the GBA got ports of Doom 1 and Doom 2 and the sound was really great, music just hammering and really good quality monster screams which are important to some area's in the original dooms, you open the wrong door and find a room full of screaming imps at you... can be terrifying... well... it was 20 years ago, now it lights up the nostalgia part of my brain and reminds it about how that was the peak of game horror at the time, works for me still.

When it comes to the 1080p on PS4 and 900p on the X1 I have to admit I would be slightly more keen to buy the system which has the higher performance when the software costs the same... when it comes to the console landscape, obviously a PC would offer higher settings again for the same price, but when it came to the PS4/X1 the additional power which came with the system was a nice factor... but it was not the deciding factor for me at all, the X1 reveal and Don Matticks idiotic stance where people asked him "is it going to be like steam" and he didn't just say "yes, yes it will be just like that, and gamers will love it like they love steam" instead he wanted to distance himself from Steam and claim it was unique... and no one wanted unique.

Edit - Should point out, that a lot of the time I play my PS4 via the remote play on the Vita anyway, so I'm experiencing the system streaming to a 540p device, so yeah a 900p original resolution wouldn't have hurt my experience too much.

Its talk like that i just dont understsnd. To the point i actually even look at it as misinformation.

What PCs are people buying? How is it possible for a PC to offer better performance at the same price of a console? Or is it that when people say stuff like that they don't take into consideration EVERYTHING that actually makes up a PC or they are just talking like everyone has a desktop already and only have to buy a GPU?

I really don't get it. So just to be sure, that statement suggests that you can walk into a store, spend $400 on a PC that you intend to use primarily for playing games so at least you get a controller or mouse and keyboard too. And you would walk out with something that can outperform a PS4pro?
