pretty accurate numbers of VGChartz then, less than a million under tracked is actually pretty good going.

I absolutely believe there will be a PS4 Pro + and PSVR Pro before we see PS5. The leap in tech to make PS4 completely obsolete won't happen for many more years. We need SSD's to drop in cost, and HBM Memory to reach larger pool sizes before that happens. PS5 to be even close to the same leap as previous generations has to have 40TF of power and 128GB of RAM. Even at that, with deminishing returns, it still won't have the wow people expect. If PS5 comes in 2018 like a lot of people are saying, there will be a lot of disappointed people that, and the worst selling PS home console of all time. |
Well they are a lot of potential upgrades and new tech options before the PS5 come out, including a PS4 portable by the time PS5 come out and a native 4K option on PS4proPlus, a 1TB SSD version, a PSVR with an integrated GPU upscaling the resolution and the obvious PS4proSlim.
Waiting for 2020 before releasing a next gen console would be beneficial for everyone as they could wait for native 4K withot sacrificing polycount and effects.

I dont see there being a PS4pro+...... but i also don't see there being a technological leap from generation to generation like we used to have before. I think the problem is in the manufacturing technology.
The main governing factor as to what or how powerful the processors we get in new consoles is one simple thing. The fabrication process. Yes chip and architecture design is great and all, but the fabrication process is what is responsible for those massive power spikes from one generation to the next.
For example, PS2 Emotion engine CPU processsor was 240nm, PS3 launched wirh a 90nm processor, and then the PS4 was released with a 28nm processor. For us to see a similar kinda jump from PS4 to PS5 we would basically have to be on a 3.5nm fabrication process.
The reason sony or ms can comfortably do this whole mid gen refresh thing isn't just to "keep gamers interested" but it's because they know that those node shrinks have slowed to a crawl. We are likely to be using the current 14/16nm process for the next 4-5yrs. Then the 7-10nm process comes along which compared to what's in the PS4pro would result in not much more than another 2x jump. So basically from a 4TF GPU to a 8-10TF one (doubling CU count but also most likely being able to clock much higher).
This is why I feel the distinctions between gens will become blurrier than ever.

Completely agreed. PS4 Pro Plus should bring solid 4K and support a 1440P PSVR with HDR, and have all PSVR tech built in for easier set up. I also think a PS4 handheld is an absolute must, along with PS Phone finally happening. With only 17 million Xperias forcasted this year, with 5 million in profits, it is time to hand the mobile division over to a branch that can actually make it profitable. Even if Sony only sold 10 Million PS Phones and Handhelds per year, the profits would be 10 times that of the Xperias.
If I ran things at Sony, I would have a three year cycle starting right now.
2016 = PS4 Pro & PSVR
2017 = PS4 Laptop/Tablet
2018 = PS4 Handheld, PS4 Handheld/Phone & PS4 Phone
2019 = PS4 Super Slim/PS4 Pro Slim/PS4 Pro+/PSVR Pro
2020 = PS4 Laptop/Tablet Slim & PS4 Laptop Pro
2021 = PS4 Mobile Line Revisions
2022 = PS5 and PSVR2
Super simple, Home and VR, Office, and Mobile. Every year a platform is improved to meet a lower entry point, and maintain a flagship product. This gives them a massive reach appeasing to many different kinds of consumers, and allows them to take full advantage of the PS4 OS and PlayStation Network. This gives them constant improvement, constant revenue and profit streams, and allows them time to build PS5 into something truly worthy of a next gen console.
For consumers, this means more choices, more options to upgrade, greater value from products, and much longer life cycles. Hopefully, the future of PlayStation looks something like above. It's better for Sony, it's better for consumers, and it is better for innovation.

Lol..... and you would cripple the playstation. Good thing you aren't the one running things.
I think its easy to lose sight of what console gaming is really about. Ideally, a platform holder wants to spend as little as possible on not just hardware, but the hundreds of millions that go into R&D for said hardware.
Its abiut software and services. What works best for sony and playstation is to make hardware that they can sell en masse, so they can sell software to all those people and services like PS+ and PSvue.
And the mobile thing is a complete waste of time and resources. What will the Playstation phone/tablet run on? Android? will you be able to play PS4 games on it? or will they make games specifically for it?

The days of PlayStation being a single hardware platform for 5 - 7 years at a time are done. There are to many competitors to stand still in the market now, and because of that competition we will never see software optimized like we did during the PS2 and before era. PlayStation has to evolve to survive. By utilizing the chipset of the PS4 across a wide range of devices they massivly expand their market while keeping the simiplist development enviorment possible. This is absolutly vital as they have to offer a way to locally access your games from as many devices as possible, to maintane a parity in value with the competition.
If you can't see that every Sony TV, Blu-ray Player, Smart Phone, Tablet, Handheld, and Console should be running on One company wide OS and Hardware platform, then I am not sure what to tell you. This has been the idea behind PlayStation from the onset. Ken Kutaragi wanted to use PlayStation tech and software in all Sony devices. PS3 was his crown jewl, and Cell and XMB where supposed to unifiy Sony, but when PS3 was botched, the company parted ways with him, and it set Sony back nearly a decade. Now we are back at ground zero, and Sir Howard Stringer, and Kaz Hirai have finally got the company back to a point of unification. The PS4 tech and the PlayStation Network are the foundation for the unity and growth of the entire company.
As for the PlayStation Phone and Tablet, they would run on the same chipset found in the PS4, and they would run on a modified version of the PS4 OS. They would run all PS4 games, as they would be identical to PS4. A tablet/Laptop will be more than possible on 10nm tech next year, and a Handheld/Phone will be possible on 7nm tech in the next two years. If they want to speed things up for a handheld and phone they can cut out a few GPU cores, lower the clock speed, run games at 540p, and checkerboard up res them to 1080p.
All PlayStation games going forward are going to be built on scalable engines. As Sony releases more PS4 hardware with more or less GPU cores, different clock speeds, and more RAM, developers will be required to make games run across the entire PlayStation ecosystem. Thanks to the unity across devices, developing games across all PlayStation hardware will be extreamly easy, and add very little development to games, with some instances not requiring any additional work.

The point is they dont have to do all that to be (more) successful.
They have playstation. make home console hardware that's connected to TVs. Release games for said hardware. Profit. Make iterations on existing hardware every 3-4 years and maintain forward and backward compatibility. Which extends home console user base and prevents you from ever starting from zero again. The beauty of that is that it flips the whole console model on its head. You no longer make new hardware worrying about building an install base as soon as possible. Instead you look at you insatll base every 3-4yrs and see how much h of it is still on your oldest running hardware which tells you where to focus on optimization.
The have remote play, rather than try and release new hardware in every sector, tablet, phone, PC....etc instead they should focus on getting remote play right. This ensures that with the one console they expect everyone to buy, those people can use remote play to play on their tablets, phones...etc.
The have Playstation Vue and PlayStation now, these two apps can be on every device platform you can think of. And PSvue is alresdy showing that's the direction they are going with. Thus you don't even have to have a PlayStation console to be tied into the Playstation ecosystem.
The already have the foundations of a great and profitable business model and by simply fine tuning it they stand to make signifivantly more and become stronger. Simply no reason to invest heavily in so many different hardwsrr types and even take on already established operating systems when they can just piggy back on what's already there.
Again, stop thinking as PlayStation as a hardware business. The hardware is just the trojan horse. The brand is more about software and services than anything else.

A lot of products with PS4 in the name would decrease PS4's sales like it did to the Steam Machines.

Two problems though.
1. Sony is a hardware manufacturer, and they have devices and knowledge in each of the markets I mentioned above. Currently they are using Android on these devices, and it is doing massive damage to the Sony name. They need to bring all of their devices onto a single Sony OS, and the PS4 OS is the best they have. By running the PS4 OS, and Using PS4 tech in all Sony device, they greatly expand their userbase, and make the PS4 hardware, PS4 OS, and PSN a much more lucrative place for developers, which in turn makes it a more lucrative place for consumers.
2. Streaming is the future, eventually, but it is not their yet. Data caps are real, and Remote Play + PS Vue + PS Video + PS Music + PS Now, is more than the average consumer can handle on their data plan. Even as a hardcore data user, it is not feasible. I pay $300 a month for data, and I have Unlimited at home, but only 50GB on Mobile.
I already use Remote Play a lot on the Vita, and it is good at times, but for some games, fighting and racing most notably, local is the only way.

This is a lot different than steam machines. Steam Machines has a bunch of different devices that were all nearly the same, and only focused on one market.
What I am talking about is bringing PS4 tech to many different sectors, and using it to replace the current devices Sony already makes, in an effort to unify the company, and drive up profits. Sony is forcasting 12M TVs, 17M Smartphones, and 20M PS4s this year, in my example, that would be 49M new PS4 owners this year.
Seriously, this is the only logical way forward for them. They have to unifiy around an in house OS that drives up the value of their brand, and makes their hardware amoung the most lucrative places to release software, games, video, apps, etc.
Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born.
