This literally is just gong off the assumption that the device will have a simplistic OS. How do you know that? Have people already forgotten that only 1 GB of the 2 GB, that the Wii-U had, was actually used for games? Also, isn't it not unified system/ video RAM like the PS4 and XB1? 2 GB of actual game RAM seems most likely, which is pretty bad considering it's less than half the RAM of consoles released almost 3 1/2 years prior.

Would you mind linking to the article these are from? It's somewhat meaningless without context :p These graphs aren't particularly relevant to the discussion anyway (we don't know how much usable RAM the Switch has, the PS4, X1, and maybe Switch are all using different types of RAM, and frame-rate isn't the core reason for wanting more), but i'd be interested to see it regardless ^^

Obviously this is for PC. All other settings are the same, only RAM is changed.

Test System Specs

Skylake Desktop PC
  • Intel Core i7-6700K (4.0GHz - 4.2GHz)
  • Asrock Z170 Gaming K6+
  • Dual-Channel: 16GB DDR4-2666 RAM
  • Dual-Channel: 8GB DDR4-2666 RAM
  • Single-Channel: 4GB DDR4-2666 RAM
  • GeForce GTX 980
  • Crucial MX200 1TB
  • SilverStone Essential Gold 750w
  • Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

The gtx 980 has at least 4GB of VRAM, the RAM you have in the images is the System RAM, the RAM used the Windows actually needs to run the game and all other processes.

If you are gaming at 1080p (even though on PC 1080p is kind of the minimum nowadays) on graphically intensive games, if you use a GFX card with for example 2GB VRAM vs one with 4GB, you will find a bottleneck.

So don't mix things, those graphics don't mean what you thought they did

I guess the ps4 pro adding an extra GB of RAM and in flight compression to save memory and bandwidth is not a thing? Nor the Scorpio rumored to get 12GB ram? These are the systems the Switch home console version is going to live with, as well as the ps5 will be out during the Switch's lifespan.

So we have ps4 pro 9GB, 5.5GB for games at 216 GB/s plus delta color compression.
Scorpio 12GB, 8GB? for games at 384 GB/s
Switch 4GB, 3GB? for games at 25.6 GB/s?

I'm sure Nintendo games will look great on it. I'm not sure if the modest upgrade compared to the WiiU will be all that noticeable, yet MK8, Mario, and BoW already look great. Large open worlds like Xenoblade will keep falling behind.

On the other hand, low memory, low storage, perhaps loading times will finally be shorter as well.

PC are really different mate, just to give you a small example, my PC wasn't detecting my other 4gb of my 8 gb of RAM for some reason, I didn't know it until last week, but I played Rise Of The Tomb Raider on Ultra (got a GTX 1060 6gb OF GDDR5) and the game wasn't even using 3gb of my regular DDR3 considering the OS is taking like 2gb BUT was using another 4GB of my VRAM this alone is 7gb( Consoles share Ram I believe) so those graphs could be for just standard Ram which really I have been monetoring and even taxing games don't use a lot of this RAM on PC but they do use a VRAM more. So even for consoles like ps4 8gb is low, because they shared for the OS and Games, while in PC you got RAM for the OS that is also useful for games and VRAM for games.

^ thats useless.

On PC's typically the video card has its own memory pool, and the system its own.

The Switch will have to share that 4gb pool.

Switch doesn't have to worry about 4k and probably 1080p too. VR won't be on Switch (not as a single device at least). Nintendo doesn't need an OS bulky enough to take over the living room with it's 'all-in one' home entertainment device approach.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

There's no way all the 4gb will be used for games.

Ram is mainly just to hold resources and allow for higher res textures.

More ram doesn't necessarily mean more power, it just means more multitasking and resources for games (which can help visuals if more resources are available and better higher res textures.

Basically this is either no news or bad news.

Wow, i didnt thought folks here are so uneducated in how pc/consoles work in terms of RAM, vRAM etc...

They are, and they even think more RAM=HIGH RES. I do agree RAM is important on console because is shared, but I don't know why they compare Consoles and PCs they work completly different we got RAM and VRAM, I guess is the lack of knowledge!
