I love both but i'm gonna go with DQ because of Toriyama's character and monsters design and overall better games in the franchise.
DQVIII remains as the best JRPG ever made for me.

| Final Fantasy | 109 | 61.93% | |
| Dragon Quest | 61 | 34.66% | |

Hard to say, both have their own style, both are great, final fantasy is always more darker and dragon quest is more colourful

Yeah if you only game on one nintendo consoles. |
There's Xeno on Playstation too, and Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy is on Nintendo consoles.
Wow, your point really isn't adding up is it.

Is just a common theme, its well known Nintendo fans say xeno is best jrpg because they haven't played anything else. Its literally only Nintendo fans, no one else. . . .And if you were to ask them they would all say xenoblade is the best probably followed by "the last story " in number two xD
Anyway this thread isn't about xeno and no body cares if you think its better because no body asked.

I don`t know if they just never released in the UK or something but I`d never even heard of DQ until I had the internet and of course never actually saw one in a shop available to buy either. Plus Dragon Quest seems to be a Nintendo franchise, so it not being available on the platforms I prefer to play on means there still isn`t much chance of me ever playing one. If there were to release on PS or Steam though, I`d give them a go. |
Dragon Quest is super popular in Japan and mildly popular in NA. Europe didn't get DQ until its 8th installment in 2005 on the PS2, almost 20 years after the series started.
But if you're in Europe you are in access to: DQ8 on PS2, 4-6 on DS/Smart phones, 9 on DS, and 7,8, and 11 on 3DS, and 11 on PS4

Just like Persona right? OP is allowed an off point game, everyone should be. But he only says Persona because he's a PS fan right? Or maybe.... Just maybe he actually likes Persona more.
And yeah, no one has ever said Xenogears is the best jrpg ever right, lol.

Dont throw me in there ;(
I've played all of the Xeno games (Gears, Saga and Blade).
The way I see it - Gears is great and all - could compete with the PS1 RPGs for sure. Saga not so much, way too many flaws in the later games but the first game was okay. Blade on Wii is okay too - although there are a few aspects I didnt like such as the gameplay system.
Final Fantasy is in a whole different league to all of these franchises - I would compare the Xeno series to something small and niche like the Shin Megam Tensei series (non-persona) while I would compare Persona in its own to Dragon quest. |
No, you're a Nintendo fan, you love the Xeno series and stfu! Lol.
(Edit): On a side note, I find both these series pretty low on my all time favorites as far as series go. I've played DQ VII-IX, and all the Final Fantasies to some degree, though have not beat them all (beat IV-X, XII, and XIII. I'd place Suikoden, Lunar. And the Chrono series (as well as Xeno obviously) all far above FF and DQ.
Both do things quite differently.
Dragon Quest sticks to its old-school flavor, while Final Fantasy tries to reinvent itself with every new title.
Even though I greatly enjoy both, I prefer Final Fantasy mostly because these games make a bigger emotional impact on me, while Dragon Quest goes for a more light-hearted kind of narrative.
