Forums - Gaming - Hardware scaling and performance profiles are going to be next big thing

Yeah, pretty given.
But first they are going full ARM.
Sony sayd a ps5 would come only in a new architecture. And makes sense, a new ps machine based on the same ps4 architecture would be a ps4 pro pro.
ARM is much more scalable, is anywhere, and is achieving high performance. Perfect for scalable software and performance profiles.

Nintendo with switch kinda predicted the future(again).

This is sorta happening with Xbox Play Anywhere. Played Recore on my W10 tablet a few months back and it ran pretty something. Noticed some problems but it was still very much playable. Hardware scalling will be big next year. On the Nintendo side the Switch and its home and portable mpdes, the PS4 and PS4 Pro, and the XB1 Scorpio and W10 devices

Cant argue with dat

When did Sony say they would pick a new architecture for the PS5? I hope they keep using the x86-architecture instead of picking a new one with no/limited backwards compatibility.

ARM is higher scalable? x86 never had problems with scalability and performance profiles.

ARM is more efficient in some scenarios, but has it even proven itself in devices much more powerful than an iPad Pro or a Nvidia Shield TV?

It'll be interesting how devs will approach the PS5. It will have more than enough power to brute force 4K, but devs can achieve better IQ by going the checkerboard route and improve textures, AA, shadow resolution, etc.

Well, is more a over interpreting of mine. The PS4 pro architect said PS4 pro is not a new console generation because it uses the same CPU and architecture than PS4. But I can give you that, given it could be an overinterpretation.

ARM was desinged for scalability. It is on much more kind of devices than x86. All kind of embebed systems, mobile, consoles(handheld and home). A software that runs on a ARM device is easier to run in any of those devices, cos ARM was designed for that.

Well, we are talking about CPU architectures(ARM and x86 are CPU architectures), so, we should consider only the CPU power, right? Well, The ipad, shield tv are already better powered CPUs than x86 jaguars on ps4 and xbox one. Nothing prevents one to design a system that use a ARM GPU with a GTX1080 like power.(but no one did that because for now, usually, ARM devices meant to spend low energy, but a powerfull GPU would spend lots of energy)

I don't think there'll be a PS5 Pro. I'm convinced that the PS4 Pro was released as an experiment but more than that for VR. The PS4 sales are destroying the Pro in sales - Sony won't see the benefit of releasing one next gen.

I'm too tired to go deep into it right now, but you are absolutly right. Scalable hardware from Mobile x86 PlayStation Phones, to $1000+ Premium PlayStation Home computers are where things are heading. New hardware will be rolling out every year from now on, and it is going to cause incredible competition in the hardware market, and greatly reduce stress on developers as half a dozen or so devices take over, and they can shift their focus completely to these optimized and effecient systems.

Its not going to ever be every year. That kinda business model only works if you are trying to remain in a specific price point. Eg. $500.

If sony and MS want to sell consoles for no less than $500, then every year they will have to make sure they have $500 worth of console. That used to be by throwing in games and increasing HDD sizes. However, building a larger install base is more important than selling at a higher price of entry. So dropping the price of hardware is more important.

But also, retaining the user base is just as important hence why we are seeing mud gen revisions. So now we get the i introduction of new hardware and also "new old" hardware at a lower price.

Then the cycle to bring prices even lower continues.

I think the upgrade cycle on devices will be around 3 to 4 years, but I think PlayStation is going to expand beyond just the home console. I expect to see a Laptop one year, a PS Phone the next, then another home upgrade, followed by a laptop upgrade, then another phone, etc., etc., etc.

These upgrades will be the norm going forward. PS4 Pro will eventually hit a tipping point where it outsells the OG PS4 on a month to month basis. It is just the way of th future. No one can be comptitive with  5- 6 years bewteen devices, becuase the competition will not be standing still. Plus, even at 6 years the difference between device is no longer big enough for a generational leap. Deminishing returns are requiring a shift in the market. If you can't give people a generational leap every 6 years, but you can offer a better experience to those whoe wish to have it every 3 or 4 years, then you go where the money is.

I know this new era is tough for some to grasp, but honestly, it is the best thing they can do. If they had waited and released a PS5 in 208 or 2019, the difference between the device would not be much greater than what we are seeing with Pro and PS4 right now, yet it would be called PS5. That underpowered posser would be a much bigger issue for Sony than just being honest and saying, here is a more powerful, and smoother version of the experience you already have, feel free to upgrade as you please.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

Yeah, I'll wait for that to happen - the Pro outselling the Slim I mean. As I said, I don't think there'll be PS5 Pro.

Iv got no problem with scalable hardware. Gamers don't benefit from new Gen leaps. Companies love doing it because its a massive cash grab and hype machine and gives a good reason to resell old games. Just like we are seeing this gen. If there is going to be another gen leap than ill pass it if it offers backwards compatibility. I dont want to rebuy my games again or keep multiple comsoles pluged in.
