Oh don't get me wrong, so far the efforts of anything outside of Gamefreak has been pretty meh past the N64/Gameboy Era.

That doesn't really help. Because all the declarations from Nintendo in the last years gave us clues for a environment like IOS. Meaning that there will be more than one device but only one OS/architecture. But it also could be only one device, we don't know
So his declaration doesn't confirms or denies that there will be only one device. And anyway, since the Pokemon Company always make games for both the home system and the handhelds... Well it's just "duh"
Now if only Ninten can just show the damn thing already.

In the same way we could simply say NX is a codename for a family of consoles, both handheld and home.
He actually says a home console OR a handheld, specifically seperating the two, not a handheld AND a home console like one would say about a product replacing both, though now we're splitting hairs
I hope the new concept of a handheld is a PC.

Honestly not sure what's Nintendo waiting for now.
I read how Nintendo didnt want to reveal because they're 'afraid' their competitors will copy them. But honestly if it's a hybrid then I doubt Sony and MS are going to scrap their PS4/Pro/XB1/Scorpio, so I dont think Nintendo really has any excuse for delaying the reveal of the NX.
Personally, I hope its a hybrid as I really enjoyed that feature with my PSP/PSP Go.

If we believe the other leak you can combine the two to one, making it a hybrid.
