If you're in first place in MK8 and the last place player throws a blue shell, you're fucked unless you just so happen to have a super horn but that would be a case of having... luck.
I don't want to come off as someone who hates Mario Kart. I love Mario Kart. But you can't take it seriously due to random chance.

Even without the horn, the welcome nerfing of the blue shell in MK8 means its hardly a death sentence; a good player will be far enough ahead that it won't cost them their lead.

When I play that game, and nothing hits me, I win 100% of the time. Every. freakin'. time. And I'm not talking photo finishes, I'm talking half a lap or more ahead. When I get hit by some random item, or three, or four and I'm pushed back to 10th? If nothing hits me, and I get lucky enough to have a shell or something to hold behind me? I always work my way past everyone, slowly inching my way right back to the top spot... ONLY TO GET HIT WITH SHIT AGAIN. No matter how great I race, it always comes down to how lucky I am that my opponents don't have the right items at the right times as well as what I randomly get.
It's not a game built on skill. It's a game built on chance. In F-Zero, I know that when I'm winning? If I hit my corners and race a perfect race, nothing will catch me. There is nothing to hit me. Nothing to knock me back. It's just my reflexes matched against my opponents. That's how I like my "competitive" racers.
Mario Kart is fun, but I can't take it seriously. Any game that allows the last place guy who's getting lapped to knock out the first place guy with a magical heat-seeking item, can't be taken seriously.
