How to Get a New PS4 Slim or Xbox One S for $175

The GameStop trade-in offer runs through September 20.
Last updated by Eddie Makuch on September 15, 2016

Picking up a new PlayStation 4 Slim or Xbox One S doesn't have to cost a full $300.

GameStop has announced a new, limited-time trade-in offer where you can get either system for $175. The retailer will pay you $125 for your PS4 or Xbox One when you apply the credit towards the purchase of a new console, meaning you can get either new system for $175 before tax.

This offer doesn't last forever, as it runs now through September 20. As always, it's a good idea to contact your local GameStop to learn more about the specifics of trade-in offers and how to get the full credit.

The Xbox One S launched at the start of August, while the PS4 Slim debuted today, September 15. Both systems are smaller than the launch models. You can see a comparison in this gallery.

This is what Gamestop in the US offers? No wonder people make jokes about it. In the UK the Slims will/are about £250 (just above?), you can trade in a PS4/Xbone for around £150-180, making the slim version potentially less than £100 extra. That's not a special offer, that's just going into GAME and telling them that's what you are doing. The slims don't even come with an upgraded hard drive. Seems like Gamestop taking advantage of people.

EDIT: 2 UK citizens comment on a US deal... ..

Hmm, pie.

So you're effectively paying an extra $175 for a smaller version of the same console? Is anyone that desperate for space that they'd pay again to save some? Would be a good offer for the Pro, just doesn't seem worth it for the slim though.

Honestly it is very lacking of intelligence if you are going from PS4 -> PS4 Slim, since that is not offering anything really of value. (PS4 size was already great to begin)

I can see it used for PS4 -> Xbox Slim, Xbox -> PS4 Slim, but the issue there is you are giving up the library you already bought, which again is not really truthfully intelligent, given what you invested in said device.

Now finally Xbox -> Xbox Slim, while there is some benefit for this, is it really worth $175?

We have a similar system here in Australia. It is a complete rip-off considering how much the consoles retailed for and how much said retailer will then re-sell the traded in unit for. But hey, plenty of people trade in games for $5-10 and consoles for $100 so I can't blame Gamestop/EB/etc for providing this service. I personally rather keep my games/consoles instead of almost giving them away for next to nothing.

Hahahaha..... this has gotta be stupid, or at least anyone that trades in a console to pay more for the exact same thing. I could understand why people with an XB1 will do it, but there is zero reason for anyone with a PS4 to do it. Especially when you consider that every PS4 supports HDR now.

Now this would make sense if you could push that credit towards buying a PS4 Pro.....

But look at that price, its a good thing i sold my PS4 when i did I just knew that the price will crash around this time. I sold mine and an extra controller for $250.... more like $270 but thats another story.

All i had to add to my PS4 pro was $150. I dont think I'm getting an extra controller for it tho, I sold my extra controller still in the box from when I bought it around launch.

Yeah, I normally don't do Gamestop. I shop there under three conditions:

1) "Memorabilia." (Non-game items like action figures.)
2) That rare game I cannot find anywhere else.
3) LEGO Dimensions when on sale.

I normally shop on Amazon.

Just sell it on Craigslist or any other second hand website.

My PS4 is starting to break down on me unfortunately so this is a great deal for me.

lol is this a joke? Pay $175 to keep the same console you already have.

A worthwhile upgrade for the XB1 (a UHD Player costs, $300, meaning you're essentially getting one for nearly half off), but pointless for the PS4.
