Forums - Nintendo - Could the endless runner angle be the "change" in the Mario series Miyamoto was talking about for NX?

No, Super Mario Run is just a cheap, simple game for mobile. It's a step back compared to console Mario games. Miyamoto is looking to make the Mario series better, not worse on the NX.

Better is a relative term. Appealing to a larger audience could also be viewed as "better".

An auto-runner is not going to appeal to a larger audience on the NX.  Console owners are used to higher quality and less restrictive games than mobile users.  Sure, this appeals to mobile users, but the audience for mobile and console gamers are very different.  Console users are not going to pay full price for a mobile-like game.

No I think the next Mario on NX will come with it's own attachable controller. This is going to be the "new gimmick" for the NX, custom controllers for specific games (like it or not).

But it could be good as an accent piece to the design. With the controllers it may not fit in your pocket, or people may simply not want to carry it around. Now imagine if there were simple on the go games similar to smart phone games where essentially all you have to do is carry the screen. It's smaller, it's lighter, and you can still game on it without worrying about losing buttins or breaking something on the controller part. Not saying phone games will be its focal point, it won't, but it could attract a lot of people with a smart phone game like experience.

No. This game seems rushed. I doubt he had this in mind when stating what he did.

I'd be fine with that, just ask a Smash player of the benefits of a gc controller, but a hack abd slash or platformer really needs the two sticks. Could simplify how games are played if the buttons are cheap enough.

Looks like one of the more in depth runners I've ever seen.

Um, no, it's just a runner, just like Rayman Jungle Run is mobile version of Rayman. It's a great game for it's genre, but that's it, genre itself is really, really limited.

I find playing 2D mario alone quite boring. Maybe this could change it.

Pocky Lover Boy!

Yes, and all pokemon games will be just like pokemon go from here on out, too. /s

This game was developed to work with phones. Capacitive touchscreen gaming is pretty shit for the most part, and nintendo knows that.
This is about raising their brand awareness and funneling audience back to their dedicated systems were they don't have to pay apple 30% of their earnings.

Also i think Miyamoto was probably talking about 3D mario when he waas talking anout the series innovation. 2D Mario hasn't innovated all that much over the last three decades.
