This game was developed to work with phones. Capacitive touchscreen gaming is pretty shit for the most part, and nintendo knows that.
This is about raising their brand awareness and funneling audience back to their dedicated systems were they don't have to pay apple 30% of their earnings.
Also i think Miyamoto was probably talking about 3D mario when he waas talking anout the series innovation. 2D Mario hasn't innovated all that much over the last three decades.
