Forums - Gaming - Would it make sense for Sony to add an UHD drive in 12 months?

the only way they could "add" it is if they did it like a usb drive, but for the love of god, just wait till PS5, with games being bigger in the future, textures and stuff, they could also use it for games.

Just let XBOX get the UHD people, they made their decision and I don't think it will hurt much anyway since the pricepoint is good.

Let's not rewrite history here.  If ps3 had a dvd player and cost a lot less than it did it wouldn't have stumbled out the gate.

You say Sony won and consumers lost.  By thet logic consumers lost with the Wii and the 360. Well on the 360 those who bought the HD dvd actually did lose.

You're wrong to say consumers lost.  You'd be right though if you specified that a really small percentage of consumers have lost.  Because UHD is niche in its market.

Sony won,  yes,  all consumers didn't lose,  a small niche did,  and all consumers won in terms of price.  Happy days.

I'm not rewriting history, the Cell was a super processor and compeltely unnecessary for a game console. Using a more traditional, low end, processor would have been easier for developers to work with and cheaper. Perhaps they should have spent more on the GPU and less on the CPU. The processor change alone could have kept the price lower.

Okay, consumers benefit from not having UHD in their 4K box. That's obvious.

No you're conveniently ignoring the fact the ps3 went with blu ray when others didn't. We can shift the goalposts to CPU and GPU but we're talking about blu ray drives so why go off on a tangent?

If xbox 360 went with a blu ray drive and so did the Wii but the ps3 didn't,  they both would have sold less and the ps3 sold more.  It didn't help Sony as much as it damaged them.  And it helped their opposition.

The mass market didn't care then and this gen the mass market will care even less.  UHD is more niche then blu ray was then.

Good job Sony.  Cater for the masses and not a small percentage.  Saving us money.  I appreciate that because with so many awesome games and psvr coming,  every little helps.

Its not a tangent, teh Cell was really expensive. PS3 would have benefited from getting rid of that more than Bluray. It was a useless expensive piece of tech in the PS3, a less expensive x86 would have made more sense then getting rid of Bluray. The Cell is also the biggest reason PS4 doesn't have BC.

Not having Bluray would have been best for Playstation 3, but would have slowed down Bluray's adoption rate. In retrospect, maybe Bluray was a bad idea PS3 given Playstation matters more to Sony. But people will argue getting Bluray off the ground was very important. Either way, if UHD was expensive it wouldn't be in X1 S.

Sony is saving money, not you. More value doesn't always come with a higher price for consumers.

Again, a tangent. It doesan't matter what other reasons you bring up. Fact is blu ray added a lot to the cost and it took away a lot of the cost of the 360. If they had swapped the blu ray from the 360 to the ps3 the adjusted prices would have made a big diffference.

I'm not arguing whether getting blu ray was a good thing for sony or not. we were talking about Sony were the guys who pushed the cd, the dvd, the blu ray. Microsoft did none of these. it's only fair they push UHD. They're long overdue.

No you're wrong. I am saving a consumer. I get a ps4 pro for the amazing price of $399. I don't want to be paying extra for things i don't want.

The 360 didnt have a super processor like the Cell or Bluray because they very expensive. The entry model didnt even have a HDD.

But the X1 S does have UHD because it appears to be a relatively cheap part. You would think Sony would add UHD for at reason.

People arent paying extra for UHD in the X1 S though. I feel like youre missing that simple point. If Scorpio is more than 399, its because of that sexy beastly GPU. But you'll probably argue consumers dont need all those tflops.

Sony shouldn't have put themselves in this stupid position to begin with. Let PS4 Pro have 4K UHD playback now. If MS can afford to put the drive into the XBOne S, it can't be that expensive.

So where was the outcry when the 360 didn't include a HDD or wifi?  *spoiler alert* there wasn't.

Relatively cheap?  if the xbox slim didn't have it I bet it would retail at 249. Fact is it costs a margin extra and considering the ps4's beastly sales that margin turns into hundreds of millions.  Microsoft can afford to lose that.  They've billions just lying around waiting to be spent.  Sony can't,  they have to run the business smart.  Not cater to a tiny niche. Cater to the masses.  And keep on winning.

Yep, I agree. People are going to buy 1000$ 4K TV + 400$ PS4 Pro and won't even be able to watch UHD movies. That's ridiculous. They should have reacted after the XB1S reveal.

I won't be surprised they do a 180 here, which will be very ironical indeed.

360 was released before everybody had wifi and games were played from discs. PS4 Pro is the 4K powerhouse without a UHD drive, cheap hardware X1 S has. Its a bad comparison. However, the PS3 audience did boast about having bluray and wifi.

Your bet is unlikely. I agree Sony is in a position where saving money may be important to them. But that isnt always best for consumers.

It's the best option for the majority of their consumers.

The ps3 was meant to launch a lot earlier but had to be delayed because they were waiting for the tech they wanted in it to be ready and available.  They went through development hell trying to build a beast.

And it cost them billions.  Meanwhile Microsoft rushed out theirs.  I didn't see them delaying their plans so they could include blu ray,  wifi tech etc.  No they did what was best for them and got their comsole out asap.

That turned them from pretty irrelevant with the original xbox to a major player.

This UHD incident is on a much smaller scale but the thought process is the same.  Sony know the masses don't care so they ain't taking on unnecessary costs.  Great business decision and great for the vast majority who don't care.
