Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Says It’s Looking To Appeal To Both Causal And Core Gamers With NX

I guess the NX is about appealing to its fanbase both handheld and home. It sounds like it will only be slightly more powerful than wii u but be under pressure to use minimal storage due to cartridges. It's quite likely many of its games will be wii u updates. It's not going to appeal I think to a wider audience because of most of the same reasons as wii u. It's probably just a downscaling of their hardware business before they leave hardware altogether. The market is splitting between dedicated powerful home systems like PCs, xbox and playstations and light gaming on smartphones, tv's, tv boxes and tablets. I think the middle ground is a huge chasm that Nintendo are going to be falling down with the NX.

The thing that makes me laugh is Nintendo's obsession with being "mom approved".

Is "mom" really likely to buy an NX if she has a smartphone that can already play games that she carries with her 24/7? Is she going to start carrying around a tablet sized NX to play video games on?

Like really, Nintendo, who gives a fuck what "mom" thinks.

I think the mom quote is being taken out of context, to me it seems to be less about a device that a mom would buy solely for herself and talking more about a device that mom would get for the family and would enjoy it aswell.

I'm Metroid-Sexual and all I need is Metroid.

Nintendo says they want to appeal to everybody

Idiots hear that Nintendo only want to appeal to casual gamers

Nintendo can either appeal  more to one or more to the other, but they can t appeal to both equally-   To state they are appealling to both is the same as not saying anything at all

Other than saying they want to appeal to both-  the only statemetns about the NX target market coming from Nintendo has said they want to target youth, families and more females -  Of course Reggie said "the blue ocean"    But saying both really tells us nothing

Of course they can appeal to both. There is a large middle ground between simplistic, casual, freemium titles and complex, hardcore, AAA titles.

Games that find a balance between those the spectrums have the potential to appeal to both sides. Some of Nintendo's most successful franchises are this middle ground, "casual-core" style.

I would say that Pokemon, Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Splatoon, fit into this group of games that are simplistic and casual enough to be accessible by most people while also having the complexity, depth & competitiveness to appeal to more experienced players.

They said exactly the same about Wii U and that one satisfied nobody. But it's too late anyway. With Federation Farce, Color Splash, SF0, Triforce Heroes and amiibo Festival it's obvious Nintendo is no longer capable of satisfying core gamers. They will focus on children and never reach them, because they play on smartphones and tablets now. They will lose the dedicated fanbase after so many betrayals and software droughts. The core gamers will have to buy either PS4 or XBONE for the real gaming experience.

Yes they still make things like Fire Emblem Fates, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros 4

Putting semantics aside the bottom line is basically this ... a platform that's supposed to be "mom-friendly" from Nintendo basically means something that's likely to be quite underpowered relative to other dedicated gaming devices in 2017.

And that means likely limited support from Western developers and likely also a lack of the some the top tier Japanese IP because they won't run properly on the device. The "appeal to experienced gamers" part of the equation will as per usual come from those players needing to play Mario/Zelda so badly that they're willing to accept the sub-par hardware performance and lack of several of the industry's most popular IP.

Not that that's terribly surprising from Nintendo but anyone expecting a significant change in their philosophy of the last 10 years probably should stop holding their breath. It ain't happening.

Aren't all three companies always looking for this?  It's like saying "Nintendo is looking to sell NX to as many humans  as possible".

Basically. Not exactly news worthy.

It basically is also Nintendo speak for "don't expect great hardware".

It's going to be the same type of philosophy as the Wii or Wii U, will just depend on whether fickle casuals come on board this time or not. That will depend heavily on the gimmck(s) of the machine.

Nintendo is just obsessed with what mom's think about games, like they need approval or something. The Wii had to be small and cute and very quiet because mom's don't like big, loud consoles, etc. It has to consume a low wattage because mom doesn't like game consoles consuming electricity.

But when you have those types of design restrictions it basically cripples what you can do performance wise with hardware.

like i said - you can t appeal to both equally-  Nintendo and any consumer company wants to sell to as big a base as possible but by default the more you appeal to one side of the spectrum the less you appeal to the other-   ex  higher specs higher price and a lineup of games oriented more to LOZ and Metroid will sell to one side of the spectrum-  a lower price and lower specs with games more oriented to Animal crossing and Mario party will appeal more to the other side of the spectrum-
