Forums - Nintendo - New Nintendo Patents: Detachable Controllers Etc. (GPS, Projector?)

Sounds like Eurogamer's report is looking more legit, a new patent released shows Nintendo patenting some type of detachable "controller wings" from a base screen device.

It sounds like the NX device has infared sensors on the sides which Nintendo has also used in patents before (my guess is it'll be able to also sense Amiibos, hand motion, etc.). So I think NX may have some Kinect like abilities.

Hmm I wonder how they can leverage this for certain games as well.

Customized controller addons will be great on this thing since it will give people different ergonomic styles... Still more curious about how it will feel after you detach it tho.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Yeah that could make other detachable controller types (a giant roll ball for example, vitality sensor maybe, etc).

sounds more and more like a lego console

They look rather uncomfortable.

Hmm this is an interesting development indeed

Looks interesting! Wish they'd unveil it soon so we could stop hearing so many random reports and just finally find out what it is :(

Keep in mind, patent drawings are just to give you a visual of the idea, they almost never represent final ergonomics or designs.

Okay, so I guess NX is going to be focused on Nintendo's traditional software along with some sort of mobile support via an android fork or something. I bring this up because of the detachable controllers, once they're detached it's probably going to look like a smartphone which sets the stage for smartphone style gaming. I think Nintendo is coming out of their shell a bit.
