And how much did they sell in dedicated devices in prior gens, and this gen?

Exactly. They're on the decline outside of that one gen. I'll give the DS credit, because its due. It had some of the best games on handheld, ever. Can't say the same for Wii.

And, they are lose brand power, in terms of consoles. I think you glanced over the fact that I said "they should still make handhelds". But their consoles? They've been declining since the NES, with the exception of the Wii, whose success won't is unlikely to be repeated.

Nes - 62m
Snes + GB - 135m
N64 + GBC - 65m
GC + GBA - 100m
Wii + DS - 250m
WiiU + 3DS - 80m (When is all done)

When you combine the sales there is no pattern, no overall decline but a fluctuation.

Why would you combine sales if the topic is home consoles?  Does the success of the PS4 means Sony is doing fine with the Vita?  Makes no sense, that's nothing but deflection.

yep lol

Yep, you're a troll.

Why? Because you say so?

As a Wii U owner im happy with my purchase when I bought it a month after it released!

Im glad they know their mistakes and still has the opportunity to do better. Unlike a certain product which its future is unknown. XD

Pocky Lover Boy!

The Wii U is the new Dreamcast, except Nintendo doesn't die at the end and a case can be made it had a better line up of games.

I'd say that pretty much what could go wrong, went wrong: marketing, dull and confusing presentation, unwanted concept (for the controller), few 1st party games, almost no 3rd party games, Nintendo's own games once again did not offer what consumers wanted (shooters, open world games, etc...), still no account system.

Marketing and few games at an early stage might explain a lot of why the console wasn't a success, but it's far from explaining it all, specially when the core market (Sony and MS fans), who knew what the console was and waited 1/2 years for the console to have a decent library, never truly wanted the thing.

To sum it all, Wii U was never appealing enough. That's why it not only sold bad, but it was a complete failure.

I also blame Reggie not being able to play Smash Bros, even if his life depended on it.

It's not hard having the "best reviews and ratings from fans" though. Most fans of any product are very indulgent and conformist.

He probably meant gaming fans, not Nintendo fans. So even if he's getting his facts wrong, I think he means that there are more critically acclaimed exclusives on the Wii U than on the other 2 consoles.

And the less popular the product, the more likely those who bought in will be fanatical about it.

Again, I don't think he meant Wii U or Nintendo fans. I think he meant gamers in general.

True, there are more reasons but one of the main ones is the lack of a launch game that shows the capabilities of the console in an efective way, Instead of something like NSMBU and Zombie U they should have showcased the gamepad with Mario Maker and the potential of the hardware with Mario Kart 8 or 3D World, but all of them came too late, If the launch had included SMM, 3DWorld and Splatoon WiiU could have sold twice lifetime.

This. I keep saying this. Launching with Mario Maker would have changed a lot! Releasing Splatoon in the first year of the console would also have helped a lot. Sales would have been much higher because people buy consoles early when they're optimistic about the kinds of games they would get in the future, and Mario Maker and Splatoon in the first year would have really sold the gamepad idea.

My thread for teaching VGC some Nigerian slangs

Nintendo was trying desperately to minimize/ eliminate losses they had recently taken for the first time in several dozen years - They were hoping the Wii u would take off early and they could convince 3 red parties to support it until they could 1 ) figure out how to make Hd games ( they acknowledged struggling with this) and long enough to keep expenses down - but sales dropped quickly after Nintendo started announcing major delays in their " launch window " games - Third parties quickly realized that Nintendo was barely supporting their own console nor were they following through on using the game pad in ways they had previously promised like asymmetric game play - If it was not for Ubisoft support the 1st year +/- it would have been an even bigger disaster early on - I was happy but surprised Ubisoft supported the Wii u as long as they did -
Some people will take a shot at Ubi for delaying Rayman but those same people will say " of course Nintendo should delay/ release Zelda U for the NX.... They are a business afterall.... Yada ya da ya da
And I guarantee Nintendo had the chance to keep Rayman an exclusive and keep the earlier release date had they been willing to share some of the risk w Ubisoft - that is how it works oftentimes but Nintendo chose not to for whatever reason
At any point in time Nintendo could have done more for the Wii u but once it lost momentum after the initial game delays they pretty much decided to eliminate as much risk as possible on the Wii u by cutting expenses and doing the bare min to get by till they could start talking about the NX-
That is what is most disappointing to me as a launch day purchaser of the wiiu - I kept expecting them to defend their console, their brand, their market share by making the Wii u sales/ ecosystem at least respectable but they pulled back very early on the Wii u and pretty much went down w out a fight, just a whimper - all the 3 rd parties that pulled support and or declined support early on made the right business decisions - no one can objectively say otherwise - just ask Ubisoft who I am sure wish they had pulled support much sooner
Nintendo is going to have to be the major risk taker with the NX if they want it to have a chance - I don t think they Intend to do much w 3 rd parties re the NX and I think most consumers will take a " wait and see" approach before committing ( unless it is very very inexpensive and has lots of quality games ready day 1 or very close)

Make GameCube 2! Not another Wii or wiiu gimmick Nintendo. :)

Just once I want Nintendo to say "We suck when it comes to third party support. We are goibg to fic thid."

The fact that he gave minimal spin is refreshing. Normally Reggie it's all spin all the time.
