I'd say that pretty much what could go wrong, went wrong: marketing, dull and confusing presentation, unwanted concept (for the controller), few 1st party games, almost no 3rd party games, Nintendo's own games once again did not offer what consumers wanted (shooters, open world games, etc...), still no account system.

Marketing and few games at an early stage might explain a lot of why the console wasn't a success, but it's far from explaining it all, specially when the core market (Sony and MS fans), who knew what the console was and waited 1/2 years for the console to have a decent library, never truly wanted the thing.

To sum it all, Wii U was never appealing enough. That's why it not only sold bad, but it was a complete failure.
