Oh, my bad, I wasn't specific. I was referring to the Panasonic OLED, not your plasma.

Ah fair enough. I might just be being too optimistic about OLED because I really don't want to go back to LCD for a future TV. But I do know someone who is very clued up with regards to AV equipment being both a processional reviewer and also now "in the industry" with regards to actually mastering Blu-ray titles originally for indie studios, but more lately picking up some work with major studios.

I basically let him tell me what to get :D He was pretty optimistic for the new wave of OLED sets though.

There's only two new things with the 2016 OLEDs.

1. They remain active 15 minutes after shut down to snow the screen. This will significantly reduce the chances of burn-in.

2. They're actually HDR now.

Picture of my troll den :

Get a projector. I use a secondary screen, and a tertiary (not on picture). I've bought recently a BENQ1070+.

Interesting setup with the smaller screen below the projector, though a pull-down or framed projector screen would significantly improve your image quality (unless you've already painted the wall off-white-gray).

renting, and moving in less than a year ^^ Wall is painted white, I agree with you though, my friends' setup with the black bordered projector screen is so sexy.

Also, try to make sure your gaming room is cooled down !

Back on topic, I play in 1920x1080, the projector costs 750€. I think, if you want to wait for the cost of your dream tv to go down, a projector could be a nice solution. If like me, you're moving every year, it's also a space efficient solution for transport.

OLED is a great choice, but be sure to check the response time if the primary reason you're getting it is for gaming. 1ms would be perfect, but I'm not sure how much a 4k display with 1ms response time would cost

1. Scientists have proven the human eye can't catch anything faster than 13ms, so it could be 12ms and no one would know it.

2. Response time isn't really important for gaming, input lag is.

agree to disagree, at most it would depend on what type of game you are playing. any competitive pc fps player would tell you 1ms 120/144hz is the way to go.

if the gaming setup is for mostly console gaming with loose controls, sure, 8ms might be ok in gaming more.

... Again. Your eyes, biologically speaking, can't see that. 1ms response times are a marketing ploy.

for twitch based games it's important... certainly 12ms is way way too much for precision mouse aiming.

bur hey, again, for console gaming i would agree with you it's overkill. but the same could be said for 4k right now

I agree, a pull-down is also the best option, if you don't have much space. Normally I game on TV, but when I want a bigger picture, I pull down the projector screen from the ceiling:

This definitely makes sense. I heard recently that Sony is preparing some 4K LED TVs that use more advanced LED technologies to reduce the number of backlight zones. It should get LED TVs closer to OLED without giving up the benefits of LCD, but the downside is it's still really expensive.

A higher number of lighting zones is what they're going for. The single best LED TV out right now is the Sony XBR75X940D because of its intense lightning system that allows it to be nearly as accurate in blacks as an OLED while retaining the advantages of an LED (White levels, grayscale, resistance to burn-in, etc). Plus, the Sony is using the Tegra X1 processor (the strongest used in any TV) across the board on all of their 4K TVs. This means a superior upscaler, superior noise algorithms, and a faster OS (which is also Android TV, a much more open ended OS that even supports Kodi).

You know, that is actually what I meant. I don't know why I said 'reduce' when I meant 'increase'. Well, whatever, the subject of better LEDs coming along was what I wanted to bring up, so mission accomplished! ^_^;;

... What is it about limits of the human body that you don't seem to understand? Your eyes CAN'T see differential below 12ms.

you keep repeating something that is patently incorrect.

have you ever heard about 'ghosting'? in fast moving images (as in twitch based FPS games) having lower or higher response time is the diference between the image transition being smooth or getting ghosting in the image.

besides everyone's brain and eyes are different. some people are more sensitive than others, so if you specifically aren't sensitive to these issues, that's cool, but please don't tell me what my own eyes can and can't see. i not only can feel the difference, but i feel my eyes actively hurt if I'm playing on a panel with higher response time.

^ Yeah one more thing about lag. Gaming with a dedicated surround system is awesome, yet beware amplifiers add latency too. A faster panel helps in the total lag from wireless controller input to seeing the image.
