Casual fads do fade, but it usually still takes a couple of years.
Nintendo can probably ride the Pokemon Go gravy train for a while.
If Animal Crossing is a big hit ... then they are on fire.

Well if Pokemon Go can maintain a certain level of success for years (which I find unlikely tbh) then I would assume that the handheld versions will no longer be as much of a system seller as they are now. You might say "they are completely different games" which is true but if people associate ios/android as the home of pokemon because that is where everyone and their mother is playing it then a lot less people are gonna want to play on the platform that is no where near as popular. If all their friends are playing Pokemon Go on IOS then why would any of them want to leave that platform to go buy a 3ds or next Nintendo handheld to......... get a less popular version of pokemon very few of their friends play? This is the problem i have with people saying this is good "advertising" or "marketing" for Nintendo. To some people it seems like you cant imagine that people would actually take this shallow experience over a full fledged pokemon game and will be craving it after playing GO but most casual gamers like shallow addicting games over full fledge ones. Only the more dedicated poke fans are going to be craving more imo.
I thought it was the consensus among forum folk for years that Nintendo was avoiding putting their big titles on mobile because they didn't want to hurt their handheld division by doing so? How come when they finally do it, everyone acts as if this move will NOT negatively affect their handheld business? Of course it will in some way, they clearly think the money from mobile is worth it though.
I dont think Nintendo will leave the handheld business soon, but I do think this move will only accelerate the decrease in consumer interest in dedicated handheld gaming devices since IT SEEMS (I know it is still early) that the king of handheld console games is able to pull in more money and consumer interest on smartphones.

To be honest the dedicated portable market was likely going to continue to erode. If you can't beat 'em ... join 'em ... if Nintendo is making huge profits off mobile gaming, they just can't ignore it.

If you're predicting Nintendo to go mobile, I have even less sympathy for you. Not that your entire reply isn't effectively a redirection, since nobody has been predicting them to that I've seen - it's all been want.
We're talking about a massive app that's a few days old like it's a permanent installment in Nintendo. This could fall apart a week from now once people get bored of it, or it could redefine mobile gaming. We don't know, and people are going out of their way to suggest that one of the three biggest brand in gaming's first mobile outing is the catalyst for a multi-billion dollar company to leave specifically what's made it those multi-billion dollars. If anybody is predicting at this point he/she is in lala land; if they're wanting, again, probably a sign that they're not the audience Nintendo aims for anyway. You don't need a passive aggressive shot at me to acknowledge that, especially considering I'm generally equally critical to any of the big three, not some apologist. |
I'm simply stating it's an option but also one that wont happen over night. NX is definitely coming out and will be about for at least 4/5 years. If that fails then Nintendo might want to phase out their home console. They will also be dipping their other toes into the mobile market at the same time to test the waters, if mobile provides far better results with less risks, why wouldn't they consider it.
I haven't read people wanting them to go mobile, just people getting too upset by these predictions.

Nintendo is at least smart enough to see the writing on the wall. The handheld market just isn't what used to be. Last gen was it's peak, with the best selling handheld, the 3DS, selling 154M AND a strong competitor, the PSP, selling 82M+. The casuals have moved onto mobile gaming. It's hard to deny it when the Vita will maybe sell 1/4th the amount of its predecessor and the 3DS might make it to half of its predecessor's sales. The NX is basically a combining of the two markets, home and handheld, and I personally see it as a last ditch effort to be successful in either.

There's an equal amount of rumours saying it's in between the PS4 and Neo and even beyond it (which I don't believe.) |
I wouldn't say there has been an equal amount. And what was said was by new "leakers" and sounded more like a Nintendo fanboy's wishes. The only thing I have read from leakers who are somewhat trusted is to expect OG XBO level of power. Which given there MO of late, and the fact that they want to pack in a controller/handheld unit, fits the bill much better than a $299-$349 beast of a machine.
Nintendo hasn't been concerned with competing with power since over a decade ago, most likely because they lost against the PS1&2 trying to do so, and I don't see them becoming interested again. But I suppose we will see.
I think NX will be a system who can receive all games types, portable / home / smartphone with features like play with pad or other...
Nintendo can't going front smartphone with HH, they have to including it in HH... How much dollars pokemon go make for Apple store and playstore ? Why don't take a part of all smartphone games business ? Nintendo just need intégred smartphone fonctions in the next HH... And clash of... Or hay day could come on e-shop.
Why would Nintendo quit hardware consoles when they still making profit (even with Wii U), and when hardware revenue is actually half of their revenue.
They can make consoles and games for them, mobile games, amiibos, toys, theme parks, movies...Nintendo plan is expand their business not shrink.
I think that nintendo will likely go third party and make games for all home consoles, pc and mobile after NX has run it's course.

| Kai_Mao said: People who want Nintendo to go third party or spread their IPs to other platforms out of the goodness of their hearts is like saying Sony should just sell the PS4 for $100 or for free out of the goodness of their hearts. They're a business first and foremost. If Nintendo feels like they can maintain control of their IPs and showcase them in a variety of ways (the freedom that they may or may not have if they go third party) through their dedicated platforms then why not? They've emphasized on software and hardware intertwining with each other. As of now, we don't know how Pkmn Go will fare long term. It's a wait and see thing for now. |
And here you arre acting like Nintendo is making their own platform out of the goodness of their hearts. If they continue to have large success on mobile platforms, Nintendo might be better off spreading their IPs to other platforms rather than make their own because of profit. They're a publicly traded company. They have shareholders they are beholden to. Period.
If it makes more financial sense (especially long term) to make PS5, XB2, and mobile games than to make their own hardware, that is likely the direction they will take. If it makes more financail sense to keep making their own hardware they will. It all comes down to dollars and sense. Nothing more, nothing less.
No, Nintendo needs to bring back their handheld audience with the handheld NX, get them away from mobile games. Plus, they can start promoting Pokemon Sun for the 3DS on Pokemon GO and maybe more people will get the 3DS.
