Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Games Need To Sell 2 Million On Average To Be Profitable

Thats very odd... Zelda looks wayyy more ambitious than the average Nintendo game and it also took longer to come out compared to other Nintendo games... And does that count handheld titles as well?

He is saying he average" Nintendo game- i have no doubt that Zelda BOW needs more than 2 million sales and a game like Mario Tennis a good bt less than 2 million

Games like Mario Kart, Smash, Splaton etc had substantial advertising campaigns - were as games like Zenoblade, Toad Treasure tracker etc had much lower advertising budgets

In that case, this whole statement is pointless since we never know what game which budget had. It's just a number thrown at the crowd with no concluding information.

I relly doubt about it, maybe Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Xenoblade, new Zelda...but other Nintendo games, hardly.

Surely he's only referring to the big AAA games? Something like Mario Party shouldn't need 2 million to turn a profit.

intendo is not going to disclode line item budgets for their games-  However, since they were addressing the stockholders, they gave a base numbers or "ball park number"  I m not sure what is difficult to understand-  the 2 million is a reference point for their games on avergae- obviously some will be higher and some lower  but the 2 million # is a good "rule of thumb"

I believe it was Myamoto who provided this 2 million number-  but Nintendo will release their official english language version of the Q and A soon so everyone who wants can read it when they do

Well he didn't say that here of course but Nintendo said that in another thing...

According to that... Zelda needs 2 million sales to be profitable so... Its very odd that other Nintendo games require the same amount of sales considering just how huge of a project it really is compared to other Nintendo titles.

That Gamespot article is quoting an apparent mistranslation coming out of the Investor Q and A this week-  That is what the guy Zhuge in this thread was saying-  That the various gaming sites etc used an inacurate quote/translation , that the actual quote siad Nintenod needs to sell 2 million for an average Nintendo game-  So if that is the acuarate translation then the gamespot article is wrong (along with all the others that ran the same story based on the same mistranslation-    Nintendo will release their english translation soon ( i think about a week or so)- when they do anyone can read the quote -  and see what if any additional context was used

Hopefully that will clear things up then!

You have to consider by "average game" he's surely referring to the big budget titles here. Clearly something like Toad, HW, the Zelda remakes, or Splatoon don't need to kill to perform well. But something like Galaxy or mainline Zelda, with years in the pipeline and large teams, have to sell that, and always do. The only recent one I think would have missed the mark is Xenoblade X. And possibly DKCTF depending on the budget for that one.

Splatoon's budget was huge though. Nintendo has spent so much money on marketing for the game alone, it's probably 2x the amount paid out during development.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

That cant be true for all their games though.
Stuff like Cpt Toad, remakes, splatoon wouldnt need that amount to be profitable imo.
