The problem I have with the Wii is 2 fold. The first is that the controls for the most part either a) suck ass, or b) don't take any advantage of the Wii's motion controls at all. Almost all of the games can be played just as well with a regular gamepad. And in most cases I prefer the gamepad. The controls for Metroid Prime 3 sucked. I hated them and preferred the original's controls. I was a huge fan of the first MP game, and the third was so disappointing. I borrowed a friend's Wii by the way, so I have spent a pretty good amount of time with a lot of Wii games. I also thought the Wiimote controls for SMG felt tacked on. Pointing at stars to collect them? Hardly game changing or innovative. Shaking the Wiimote to do a spin attack/activate stars? How is that different from just pushing a button? I could go on and on about every Wii game, and I've actually played a lot of them. The only 2 games I felt played really well with the Wii controls are MOHH2 and RE4. I just do NOT like the Wiimote and most games feel gimmicky incorporating them into their gameplay. Maybe this will change in the future, but for now, I can't see anything special about it.

The second problem I have are the graphics. Yes, it's a secondary concern. The controls don't do it for me. I'm not paying $250 for a console with marginally better graphics than the original GC. Nintendo chose to concentrate their R&D money on the controls. Good for them. I don't like them, and all I'm left with is a console that doesn't appear much more advanced than it's predecessor. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Wii games look bad at all. I still play PS2 games, which for the most part, look considerably worse than Wii games. But I want to feel like I got my money's worth out of the $250 the Wii goes for. And I just don't at the moment.

On a side note, I've also grown a little tired of Nintendo's main franchises. I could really care less about Mario Kart coming out. I've enjoyed all of them up til now, but my interest has sputtered a lot recently. SMG wasn't that great IMO. The only part I really liked were the 2D parts where the gravity would change. I didn't like the more focused approach and controls of Metroid Prime 3. I enjoyed the solitude of being on a planet alone, with little information about what was going on, and getting the story through scanning terminals. I didn't need cutscenes and voiceacting to make the game enjoyable. Even Zelda doesn't hold my attention for long. I've liked all of them, even Wind Waker (at least until the part where you have to collect the 8 shards), but now I've grown sort of tired with Zelda games. Especially after playing the excellent Shadow of the Colossus, which ranks very highly on my list of action/adventure games.

Maybe I will get a Wii at some point in the future. If they can reduce the price (maybe $150), and get out some more interesting AAA titles, I'd be tempted. I probably won't as I only got 1 console each generation in the past, and there will be plenty of PS2 (hurray for 60 GB PS3)/PS3 games to keep me busy until the next generation of consoles come out.

Before everyone jumps on you for your opinion being different than theirs, I'd just like to ask what bothered you about the MP3 controls?

I was just about to ask him the same thing. In the short time I owned the Wii, the only game I played was MP3. Controls were perfect for the most part.

About MP3 controls:

They felt too lose. Even using the "pro" control setup (I forgot what it's called, the one that's more sensitive) I felt like basic maneuvering was an exercise in patience. Especially with the high speed of the space pirates. As an example, the battle with Ridley while falling down the shaft was frustrating as hell. The lag that the Wii pointer has made aiming at his mouth a pain (I felt like I was using my wireless mouse to play an FPS game). I mean, I don't think I'm bad with the controls, I still beat him on the first try on the harder difficulty level, I was just frustrated by the end of the battle. I felt like I would have had an easier time using just a regular game pad.

Thanks for not flaming me guys. Don't get me wrong about the Wii. I definitely see it's virtues, and can definitely see why people love it. It's just not my cup of tea.

Million. All I have to say is your awesome and also:

EPIC WIN.

Am I the only one who gets a kick out of ill-informed fanboys people trying to convince themselves that they're really well informed and unbiased, and of watching others chase their own tails trying to point out the problem?

Sorry its just that I play a lot of FPS as well with dual analog. And on its most sensitive setting I have never played a FPS that lets you whip about at the speed the wiimote does in MP3 on a dual analog. So to see you say the sentive setting is to slow, then say it would have been so much better on DA, Im like what? So slower manuverability would make handling the super fast enemies easier to manage?

Where's the guy with the .gif of Smash Bros that says "EPIC FAILURE" LOL I need to post that in this thread...

OT: What are you talking about???They ARE in the same league...Wii has motion controls and so does PS3...(Wii has MUCH better ones though, no offense PS3, you're better at graphics =-)) But Wii has diff. kinds of games, but they are still in the same leagues....Now if the guy with the EPIC FAILURE sig would just come here..

When a fan boy cannot accept defeat, he may make things up, to try to turn the tables. This is proof. Wii = PS3/360. Why? Because all three are this-gen consoles. It defeated them, and not because of cost, or other, excuses, but because it's innovative, fun, and gave new life to Nintendo's greatest franchises. Gamecube, and Dreamcast, were both $100 cheaper than the Playstation 2, and Xbox, yet the Playstation 2, and Xbox, outsold them both. Playstation 2 murdered the Gamecube, Dreamcast, and Xbox, combined, more than twice. This whole "price" thing is a cheap excuse, and it has been proven wrong. Price is just a barrier, and is quickly over-ruled by a console's library of games. Wii has 90%+ exclusives. Playstation 3 does not. Not until Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out, which is going to kick ass.

Considering the alternatives, I don't think hardcore gamers have much of a choice when it comes to not owning a Wii. You can play a non-dependable console, a console with mediocre multiplats and very few AAA games, or a console with some really great AAAexclusives from Intelligent Systems and other Nintendo developers.

How could a "hardcore" gamer justify not owning a Wii.

I consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer. I will probably never own a Wii. I've owned an NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Gameboy, and the DS. I used to be a huge fan of Nintendo. When the Revolution/Wii was announced, I was excited about all the possibilities. Then I got to try out the Wii and was left thoroughly unimpressed by everything about it, except for the nice compact size of it.

You should buy it for Fire Emblem, if you were a fan of Path of Radiance. It's got some high quality games, so don't get caught up in the idealism about the Wii, that being a PS3 owner in todays modern gaming forums will force you into, more often than not. If you liked the gamecube, the Wii is better.

Actually I totally agree with you except for Wii Sports, Zack & Wiki, Godfather and Mercury Meltdown where the controls totally make the games great.   Same goes to a lessor degree for a lot of related / similar titles.  A large part of the problem is that established game genres and IPs were developed for traditional controls and Wii controls are tacked onto those game mechanics with varying results.

Look for games that are designed around the wii controls - Z&W, PES2008, etc. to really do the Wii controls justice.

Nintendo fanboys braging about how excellent the Wii is because of it's amazing hardware and software sales is fine by me , they can scream about how legendary and excellent it's sales are all over the forum for all I care . But what really pisses me off is when Ninteno Fanboy's compare the graphical capablilties , hardware sales, software sales to the PS2 , PS3 , 360.

  • The PS2 was made what , 8 years ago ? OBVIOUSLY THE WII WILL BE MORE POWERFULL the comparison threads are stupid !
  • I'd argue that the Wii's in a league of it's own , it's not in direct competition with the 360 and PS3 . Many Wii owners( who are also hardcore gamers) are PSWii or Wii360. I can't imagine anyone settling with the Wii alone for current gen gaming.
  • STOP making threads about wether the Wii can play 360/PS3 games , NO IT CAN'T ( well without some severe degrading) how many mini's do you see with Ferrari engines in em ?.
  • I don't think the 360 or the PS3 (unless you wanna compare the PS3 with sony's last console) should be seen as doing badly simply because the Wii is doing good , I read some where on this site that the 360 has significantly better attach rates than the Wii, wouldn't this imply that a higher percentage of 360 and PS3 owners are different kinds of gamers ?(hardcore gamers maybe) THEY AREN'T IN THE SAME MARKET.
  • Up until recently the 360 and the PS3 where much more expensive than the Wii , at launch I coulda bought multiple Wii's for the price of the PS3 , why ? BECAUSE THEY AREN'T IN THE SAME BLOODY MARKET.
  • A grandma , 40 , 35 year old doesn't walk into a shop and say "oh the Wii's are sold out , i'll buy a 360 instead because it's equally cheap) a large % of Nintnedo's market aren't

IF PS3 , XBOX 360 , PS2 VS WII IS AN ACCEPTABLE COMPARISON THEN SO IS SKODA VS FERRARI OR FOOTBALL VS BASKETBALL , IPOD VS CHEAP IMPORTS.

GRANTED SOME OF THEY'RE CUSTOMERS ARE THE SAME PEOPLE BUT I'D BET A LARGE % OF NINTENDO'S CUSTOMERS WOULD NEVER BUY A PS3 OR 360.

I know i'll probably get flamed to hell but the satisfaction of getting this off my chest was and is well worth it.

Ok, I don't have time to read all the responses, but here's my 2 cents:

1. Yeah, I agree with you, but people have every right to compare them, and that doesn't mean that the threads are stupid, they could be comparing trends since launch or some similar scenario.

2. Others would argue that the Wii is competing directly with the 360 and PS3. I personally think that it is a great compliment to my PS3, but I know plenty of people who are more than content with only owning a Wii.

3. Of course the Wii can't play 360 and PS3 games without some loss of content/quality. The hardware just isn't as powerful. The Wii doesn't need to, though, because it has great games of its own.

4. If I remember correctly (feel free to correct me if I remember wrong), the PS3 had a lower attach rate than the Wii. It isn't just about hardcore/casual gamers, though the Wii is certainly getting a much broader audience than the PS3/360. The Wii still releases games for more "hardcore" gamers.

5. Or, it could be that the Wii just has less complex hardware, and costs less to manufacture than the 360 and PS3.

6. To be honest, I'm not sure I understand this bullet. Can anyone help me out?

Last time I checked, people do compare b-ball and football. I'm not sure about cars, because I'm not really into cars.

"GRANTED SOME OF THEY'RE CUSTOMERS ARE THE SAME PEOPLE BUT I'D BET A LARGE % OF NINTENDO'S CUSTOMERS WOULD NEVER BUY A PS3 OR 360."

Doesn't that kindof contradict the rest of your arguement? (By the way, the "they're" you used is incorrect. That would be like saying "Granted some of they are customers..." -sorry about that, but I can't help it. I make mistakes as well; there might even be a few in this post.)
