IGN is just simple when it comes to ratings. They give their honest review and they are pretty acurate, seeing as when a review of theirs is good, the game really is good.
Then you go to Gamespot and see theyrate Xbox 360 games higher, an example: Halo.
I love my Xbox, sure, but a game like Halo 3 doesn't desserve a 9.5. Its commonplace to see a shooter (FPS or 3rd person) get reviews of 9.0 and above when it is headed to the 360. When this happens on the Wii, for example, they tend to look at the bad side.
So, to sum up on a simpler note, not only was the Gerstmann incident a proof of their faultyness in game rating as a serious matter, but also, they tend to be rating games like Halo and Gears 9.0+ just because, and give games like Metroid Primer Corruption a 8.5.
It's just my point of view.
