Forums - Gaming - Everyone seems to trust IGN and distrust Gamespot, why?

There was a thread yesterday about which game review sites are the most trusted and which are the least trusted.  The general consensus was that IGN is highly trusted by just about everyone, and Gamespot the the least trusted by just about everyone.  There were not many reasons given, so I am asking:

Why does everyone distrust Gamespot so much?

The reviews are well written, make sense, and they don't seem to have too much of a bias one way or the other.  I like their new review system of merits and demerits. Am I missing something?

Why does everyone trust IGN so much?

Having different teams for each console is an interesting idea, but it seems to break down for multiplatform games.  I want to know which version of the game is best, but the scoring between the teams can be so different it is hard to tell.

I stopped trusting GS when they gave Twilight Princess an 8.8 and just months later WarioWare: Smooth Moves a 9.1.

Then the Jeff Gerstmann debacle only ensured that they couldn't be taken seriously. Just about every other reviewer has left GameSpot since the Gerstmann incident.

Don't panic.  I distrust them all equally.

Gertsmanngate.

Gamespot fired a reviewer for giving an honest review because their advertisers thought it was too negative. That is direct proof that Gamespot reviews scores are bought and sold.  If you think otherwise, go read the details about what happened.

Yeah that Gerstmann thing kind of made me not trust GS.

I trust IGN because they are usually so damned close to the aggregate score, they also write very nice reviews.

GS distrust came from Grestmann. How did you miss that news, OP? It was ALL over the net a couple months ago =P

I've never put a whole lot of trust in reviews myself. I've barely ever looked at Gamespot's reviews, so I can't really comment on them (other than what has already been said above).

But IGN's reviews are much closer to my personal tastes than most everywhere else. Sooo, I like to look at their reviews and see what they say, since historically they review games similar to how I would.

I like GS still but sometimes they miss it big. IGN does as well, but there quite a bit controversy.

even though i disliek both, i find gamespot better. they have better descriptions of the game and they tell u whats bad and good about it. also u get feedback from ppl whove tried it.
