Forums - General - Banned from Neogaf for having a different opinion. Am I wrong?

I got banned from there for daring to say anything slightly conservative politically in an off-topic thread. Apparently comparing Obama to Santorum (casting both in a negative light for equality's sake) was the last straw.

My only thing is people praising Gaf like it's the Holy Grail of gaming websites. Site looks generic, bland, and outdated imo. Plus the moderation there is absolutely horrible as demonstrated by this thread and personal experience.

I'm pretty sure the only people that actually think this are those that have Neogaf accounts and the Neogaf mods, lol.

Plenty of people and even developers themselves have talked about how much of a joke of a website it is.

Well, that's good to know at least xD

I think you're right.  I'm better off away from there.

I can only skim that because my eyes are not what they used to be but it seems to me you're spot on. From what I can remember Gamergate was originally about corruption amongst games journalists, got ignored by a lot of 'journalists' until it could no longer be ignored and was then suddenly tranformed into an issue of sexism. A convenient transformation that allowed woman haters to spring from their mud huts and feminists to work their political voodoo.

This seems pretty accurate. I STILL to this day don't know much about GG, mainly because it's such an impossible subject to decipher fully. The structure of the internet makes it unfeasible for any resolution or growth to occur because the loudest voices are typically the most insane and/or unyielding. It's a lot like politics and religion. Out of say 100,000,000 possible political/GG/religious conversation threads that happen in some online forum daily, how many people do you think come in with an open mind, or ever change their views even a fraction? Just about zero.

It's a fantastic case of confirmation bias in action, and it can make one despair for humanity. I recently wasted a few moments of my life on a Youtube video after running into a holocaust denial person. At some point you just have to accept that no matter how right you may be (even in the affirmation of there being, quite truthfully, WAY more than a binary way of looking correctly at a subject), in the end you're just wasting your time.

That describes moderation pretty much perfectly, at least on this forum.

The tools at our disposal aren't really good enough for us to benefit the site in a greater way than trying to guide discussion, but the way that this forum has been built breeds a more competitive poster. The majority think that you're biased towards a, b or c while making decisions, when in reality (at least in my case), I care for the community itself. Having been here for over 7 years now, I've grown up around people on this forum and built relationships with them.

I think the main advantage we have over other forums in terms of moderation, is that we are more than willing to a) admit our mistakes and b) discuss current moderations with users through the site and email. Moderation reasons are open for users to see and because we're a relatively small community in comparison to other mainstream forums, everyone tends to know eachother.

I'm actually for curated moderation akin to what you see on VG Chartz. Completely unrestricted moderation leads to the likes of 4chan which is so filled with nonsense that it's practically impossible to have any real, sensible discussions.

The difference is that you can exist on this forum if you're not pro-Hillary, extremely liberal, and despise Gamergate.

I myself am a Republican, and when I was on NeoGAF I felt pressured into remaining silent. Occasionally I would express my beliefs and receive so much shock and blowback that I felt absolutely terrified about going into topics and providing them with a counterpoint argument.

Keep in mind, these are simple beliefs like "Anita Sarkeesian's videos are overly reductive and there are legitimate reasons to criticize them" or "I think EVERYONE should have lower taxes, not just poor people, because government should be smaller" or "I think we should preserve the 2nd Amendment, a ban on assault weapons does more harm than good." They are legitimate opinions which are civilly discussed in many other venues....but in NeoGAF they're de facto banned and subject to harsh moderation.

When you say something deviant on NeoGAF you are immediately put under a microscope, subject to an intense amount of scruntiny where one extremely minor slight can lead to a permaban (see the OP). Here and elsewhere, your actions have to be clearly juvenile to receive bans.

On NeoGAF I have seen a well-known African-American user make absolutely outrageous, clearly racist, anti-white comments, and yet will remain unbanned because "We want to maintain diversity in representation on this site, so we give them a free pass." I have literally seen a NeoGAF moderator say those words before.

Does his name start with an "S"?

Really?  I've seen people talking about all sorts of topics, and I've never seen someone banned just for a different opinion.  I'll admit I'm more of a long time lurker here, but I've talked to people about other political and social topics that were quite touchy and so long as it never got into a name calling fight people seem to stay here.

The difference is the mods wait for an infraction. They see you say something they don't agree with, and then they watch and wait. You'll notice that certain viewpoints tend to be banned by certain mods. However, while the watching and waiting for a slip up is unfair, it's still within the confines of the rules. That's why getting banned on VGC is (a little) more fair.

Wow that's terrible. People abuse their power when they have it unless they have experienced humility which many forum mods haven't. Mods that have worked their way up the ranks and have a good record with the sites members, usually make the best mods. For example, StarOcean on this site is a perfect example. Out of all the forums I've used, NeoGaf, Gamespot, IGN, Gamefaqs...VgChartz has the most sane mods. Very approachable and understanding. Stay away from sites like NeoGaf, it isn't worth it.

Neogaf is ridiculous on political issues. They're fine if you keep it about games. But on politics? Nope, agree with the consensus they've crafted, or get booted.
I really don't know why anyone still goes there and I really wish I knew why some people think echo chambers are anything other than delusional crap that ruins your ability to think.

I have been extremely lucky at avoiding garnering attention. At most, I just comment a few times and then, hightail out of the thread. However, that does not change the fact that I need to restrain myself in order to not get banned. It's really frustrating seeing people genuinely confused at the anti-GG comments and state their perspective on GG, only to get piled on and ultimately banned from the forum.

That last paragraph really makes my blood boil. It really screams "You can't be racist against white people".
