If they want to get 3rd parties back they have to do two things: make a console powerful enough to bring their games without needing major downgrades, and an architecture easy to develop for.

They already did exactly that with the wii u.

Stronger then Ps3/xbox 360, nontheless multiplattform games like Dark souls, GTA, COD, Fifa, Assassins Creed, Metal Gear Solid, Bioshock and co skipped the system. Many games skipped the system even before it was known as a failure.

And as far is I heard the powerpc based wii u is similar to the xbox360 and porting from x360 isnt at least nearly as difficult as to port from x360 to ps3. And the ps3 sold 80mio anyways.

They released a console stronger than PS3, and Xbox 360, but only 6-7 years after PS3, and Xbox 360's release, they should have waited until Microsoft, and Sony, released their consoles and them chose the last specs of the Wii U.

I don't think Nintendo have any choise...

DS 150 millions

3DS 55 millions...

Smartphones are what Apple and Android choise to do... But Nintendo can make a OS with a another philosophy,  more confidentiality,  intégred new technologie, more protection for Child and Web...

And put in front à lots games with theirs licences,  only on smartphone NX !

If they take only 2% of smartphones business,  it's a lots of millions selling...

Microsoft or Blackberry haven't been able to make any headway in the phone market.

People want Apple or Android's ecosystem and nothing but, and Nintendo's brand is too associated with kids to be taken seriously overnight by adults who basically rely on their phone for their entire social and business life. It wouldn't fly and Nintendo has nowhere near the marketing acumen to pull it off.

They have problems selling video games to modern teenagers ... as a video game company. Good luck with phones and adults.

Like I said if they wanted to go this route the best thing to do would simply be to team up with Apple and/or Samsung and make Nintendo branded controllers for existing phones that people actually want. No one's looked the crappy Wii/3DS/DS/Wii U OS and said "gee I'd love for this to be the OS for my phone which I depend on for my job and keeping in touch with all my friends". Nintendo can't even get cross platform purchases working seamlessly.

Wiiu OS make good job, it works like Android, there is some apps like Netflix or youtube apps,  easy to surf on Web because wiiu have panel screen...

And run on ARM processor...

The heart of Nintendo is the software, in 2014 Iwata say " on Apple and Android, there is one way of programming,  Nintendo have to be like them indid... "

Nintendo works on a big OS,  probably Android frienly, perhaps advanced cloud computing fonctions... and looking at all connected devices,  make family of products like Apple... In first smartphone...

No grown adult would be happy with a Nintendo OS ... people rely on phones for their *life*, not just having some fun on the side. A phone OS has to work flawlessly, have incredibly wide breadth of functionality, function flawlessly in a business/college/work setting, be very fast, and offer hundreds of thousands of apps.

Nintendo? C'mon. Nintendo is a company of like 5000 people. Most of whom don't know the first thing about making an OS, they are game designers. EA has more employees. Apple has 100,000+ employees. Microsoft is 118,000. Nintendo is not going to make some type of OS superior to iOS/Android/Windows Phone .... that's never going to happen. Not to mention the cost investment needed, you can't just make an OS for a few million bucks, it would require the largest investment in Nintendo's history.

it's the only way for staying on hardware business... Create OS,  working on ARM,  x86,  including vulkan API...  Be ready for futur...

Wii and Wii U both had low power, relative to the competition as a trend in their designs, Kimishima stated outright Nintendo aren't doing that with the NX.

Source?

As far as I know he never talked about power, but even talked about doing something "completly new". In terms of power they already made the n64, a powerhouse. So that wouldnt be completly new.

He just said the move away from the wii and wii u, that doesnt mean that the NX will be powerfull.

Also costs of Notebooks, Pcs and consoles ARE very compareable.

Im sorry about the fence thing, im not native english speaker and thought a fence would be a fan/ventilator :D

The Wii U wasnt released cheap. The wii was, and was a success. The Wii U was released expensive and failed. Now guess what nintendo will do next. The Wiis success was not only the motion controls, but also the affordable pricing.

You are giving many points why you think a cheap nintendo console would fail now (audience moved to smartphones) but your ignoring almost everything about why a expensive console would fail and also why a cheap console could have success.

Again some points:

Expensive fail:

No Online Multiplayer with Ps4/xbox one owner will make customers buy those system more likely.

With high installed hw base for ps4 and Xbox one people will know those system from their friends, the nx will be unknown first. One reason for the wii´s succes was not only great marketing, but also this effect: "People are visting friends which got a wii, they played it, they bought a wii after testing it for themselfs". Not everybody is likely to test out consoles in super markts. Big advantage again for ps4/xbox one

We also have a PC community which is growing and growing with more and more advantages about consoles in general

With 3 big core gamer consoles the market will be splittet.

Playstation annd Xbox already have good image and reputation as powerfull consoles. Something that cant be changed that quick. Nintendos image is cheap and for kids. Many "core"-gamers dont take nintendi serios. They arnt interested in Mario, Zelda and co but in more "mature" IPs like Call of Duty, Witcher, Uncharted, Halo and co. The Wii U was the most powerfull system for its first year, ps3/x360 still sold better in that period.

The n64 already failed as an powerfull console released some time after the weaker ps1.

Cheap success:

People will consider NX way more likely as a secondary console, next to their Ps4/xbox one/PC. Like many did with Gameboy, DS, 3DS as well.People bought the DS and Gameboy not just because it was portable, but because it has great games (pokemon) that werent available anywhere else. The Software made Nintendos handheld selling. Thats also a reason the vita failed and psps sold way less then DS.

With that strategy Nintendo can reach All customers and dont need to go in direct competition with Sony and Microsoft. Instead of already missing almost 100mio potentially customers (which already bought Ps4/xbox one by march 2017) they could reach those people too.

Instead of not beeing able to play with their friend online (because everybody would have to decide between one of 4 plattforms (ps4, nx, xbone, pc), everybody who got an NX can play together NX with his friends, even if some of those friends also have an xbox one and some an ps4.

and they are almost doing the same again. Releasing NX 3,5 Years after Ps4/xbox One launches.

I Agree with the other comment who stated that Adult people would not use Nintendo's OS, Iphone sell a lot because of Status and the same people who purchase it for Status would not purchase Nintendo OS because would seem childish to have a Gaming OS as main OS.

But i disagree with the part  he states that Nintendo cannot make a OS, Steam have 200 Employees and yet made Steam OS.

Who is Nintendo targeting with NX? Is it the handheld user base, that is much bigger for Nitnendo than the home console user base? Is it the PS4/Xb one user base, and if so is it to get them to adopt NX as their primary console, or to make an attractive second console? Is it all those people who bought Wii and abandoned Wii U / gaming in general when the 8th gen happened?

The easiest market to target is obviously the 3DS market. But it's a no growth approach. They are unlikely to sell more than the cumulative sales of 3DS+Wii U. But maybe they are happy with that prospective sized install base. ~60 million is a pretty good number for Nintendo, and a pretty compelling argument for 3rd parties to support the platform.

If Ninty is targetting the PS4/Xb one users then they have a really tough road. These gamers aren't particularly interested in Nintedo IP, so trying to get them to adopt NX as a primary console is extremely hard, and trying to convince them to buy a lower power console for a secondary console is also hard for people who are generally one console per gen owners.

IMO that blue ocean is gone forever, so targeting them is a waste of time. But I could be wrong.

Is there another consumer base that I'm not considering? Can they attract smartphone/tablet/Facebook gamers?

We don't know what people looking for,  a lot of people use smartphone juste for calling...  A lot of children playing on the iphone or Android système of their parents...  Smartphone have remplace à lot of 3DS in homes...

The war HC / smartphone is already loose. Nintendo can't make like smartphones don't here.

How much dollars are Win by Apple and Android with the sells of games on appstore and playstore ?

Nintendo OS is based on Linux like Android,  i think it's easy for Nintendo make a OS very Android frienly...

After they juste need Facebook, Twitter, instagram and important apps come on e-shop...

Nintendo have a lot to win with making HC / smartphone with propriatary OS...

If NX is a smartphone, it not remplace 3DS or wiiu,  and if this smartphone is working with a second part who's stay at home, it's a new brand concept...

People who purchase those games on Android are the kind that don't care for it, they also Random search for new Mobile games and just play it to pass the time, some people are not willing to pay 40-60US$ for a Video Game, but are willing to pay 600000000000000000000US$ in Microtransactions.
