Forums - Gaming - Graphics are best on console because of limitation. Ps4 Neo will impact this negatively?

PS4 NEO should ...

Have better looking games. 19 10.61%

Just better performance. 21 11.73%

just 4k output. 10 5.59%

Extra power just fro VR and 4k. 20 11.17%

All of the above. 54 30.17%

None of the above, fuck the NEO, 55 30.73%

Total:179

I don't think there will be that much difference then now. The Neo will face the same problems that the New 3ds is facing. No one wants to make a game for it that takes advantage of it's power because they want to reach the biggest base possible. There may be features added for that extra power but for the most part developers will still target the original specs of the PS4.

Really do not see any difference. Its not like the PS4 just suddenly disappears when the 4.5 comes out. With over 36 million users, why would you think developers will change which system gets the lionshare of development time. If anything, if you bought the 4.5 thinking you will see significant difference in graphical assets compared to the original PS4, you probably going to get educated real soon. It will be years before developers put any significant investment into the 4.5 and by that time if the original is still on the market, it still probably will have a marketshare 3 times as big if not more.

No, PS4 is the main platform this gen. It has the largest install base and sells the most. Same reason why Xbox Didn't disrupt PS2 and why PC doesn't disrupt consoles.

The only change I could see Neo creating is a push towards higher frame rates (across the board). Instead of worrying about reaching 1080p on PS4, more devs could instead relegate that to Neo for people who want to best image quality and sacrifice that for game performance on the standard PS4.

I don't see this as likely but its more likely then developers suddenly treating Neo as their primary platform and giving poor optimisation to the PS4 and Xbox One.

this was maybe true in previous generation but ever since they use PC hardware there is no difference between an optimised console port and an optimised PC port unlike last gen. Its maybe something like 3fps overall, you get diminishing returns from optimising on console now.

WOW! "none of the above FUCK the NEO" poll option is quite shocking.

To support your OP,  just look at Nintendo's unique art styles from all there many so called underpowered consoles. These were games that had a special appearance to them that were unique during their respective generations and did not look like the cookie cutter games from all the other developers.

Nintendo has always done more with less.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Yes, this will 100% absolutely give developers less incentive to push the hardware further. Why bother putting all the time, money and effort making the a base PS4 build look great when you can just use what's available to you in the PS4K?

If they develop with the PS4K as the main console, the Base PS4 becomes the "good enough" box, and by that I literally mean the least amount of effort to get the build to an acceptable level.

x86 is much easier to code for, and so is the PS4 with the unified memory space (cpu & gpu) shareing memory.

The PS4 is like a dream to code for compaired to the PS3.
There being a newer PS4(K? neo?) doesnt really change things any.

Wait. Do people actually think that they suddenly started making console games differently because they switched from Power-PC based processers to x86 processors? What makes you think that x86 processors are that big of a difference.

No. This is not true. Nothing has changed in terms of the optimization differences between consoles and PCs.

There 100% is a huge difference between an optimized PC game engine and an optimized PS4-specific engine. The PS4 engine offers more control over the hardware, and uses far less resources since it's made specifically for that hardware specification of the PS4. This is why a PS4 game will look better and run better than the same PC game running on a PC with the exact same specs. Introducing the PS4 Neo will force those engines to be made for multiple specifications, creating all kinds of decision trees and specification checks within the engine itself instead of using hardcoded values. As a result PS4 game engines will use more resources, and it will be more difficult to optimize for both specifications. In essence, creating the PS4 Neo forces PS4 game development to become far more like PC development, and as a result base PS4 games might actually start to look worse while developers come to grips with optimizing the engines for two specs instead of one.

This is why I made this thread, may I put your comment in the OP? because it is perfect for raising the type of discussion I was hoping for. I'll link qoute you so your name will be on it.

I don't mind. It's just my opinion though. As a developer who has experience working with Sony hardware this has me and my peers legitimately worried.
