Forums - Sony - Is the outrage towards PS4K proof that console gamers care more about performance and visuals than they're willing to admit?

Personally I would feel cheated by a PS4.5. I bought my PS4 ahead of time mainly because I liked the price point and the games offered. The thing is that up until now the only game I own that absolutely requires a PS4 is The Order (which I could easily live without). Had I known about a PS4.5, I might have held off on my purchase (depending on price and release date).

If it does exist, there's two scenarios. First one, it's marginally stronger and there won't any PS4.5 exclusive in which case it's useless (I really don't care about 30 vs 60 fps and all that pixel counting stuff). Second scenario is that it's a significant boost in power and that some games (or maybe just some features in games) will be exclusive to it, in which case I'll be furious that I got fooled into buying a console that can't play all the generation has to offer.

Feels that way to me. All these years the power of the PS4 was totally fine and the games look AMAZING and the human eye can't see faster than 24fps.

But when they're suddenly presented with a better choice they start to feel inferior. Why though? If the current performance of the PS4 is totally fine and in no way underpowered, why be scared of useless hardware improvements that won't improve the games in any way?

If the rumors are true and there will be no exclusive content for PS4K then I can only conclude two possible things about people who hate it.

1. Money envy. They're not able to afford all the newest things and hate if other people can buy better products.

2. Hidden regret. They suddenly realize that if Sony apparently deems the PS4 too weak, they feel as if they were wrong all along and the PS4 is actually underpowered despite their furious claims.

Anyway I don't like it. For once Sony does everything right and is about to reclaim my lost faith in them and there are people who try to hate on it for their own selfish reasons.

Knock it off, guys. Let Sony be great again! The claim that the release of a better console version will in any way hurt the juggernaught that is the PS4 is ridiculous.

Its simple. Sony can see a market in incremental power increasement. Sony didn't do it because the standard PS4 was too weak. The original PS4 is technically able to do everything the PS4K but just not at as high graphics fidelity. Its like Iphone owners being mad that a new iphone is being released. It won't hurt the product you have. However it still does make the PS4 worse automatically because there is a better alternative to play all those exclusives.

N3DS was released a year ago, is not so new, yet there is 0 exclusives announced for it and the life of the console is slowly coming to an end, so I see pretty much no chances to see any big release as an exclusive, it was just an update that made the console better and more confortable in many aspects, but shares like 99.99% of games with the old model.

I dont disagree with you on the Ps4K, but just because sony releases one port of an old game eventually as an "exclusive" I'm not gonna be saying "Ps4k has exclusive games", because that's just very dishonest, and honestly I do think something is gonna be eventually exclusive on ps4K, wether the number of exclusives or the importance of this releases are big or not remains to be seen, I do not think they are gonna release any big thing as a ps4k exclusive though and I'm pretty sure people is more concerning about the fact that the optimization of a bunch of big Ps4 games could be spoilt once the new machine becomes popular and the old model is not a priority anymore for developers, but that's something that nobody can shit about until it happens, if it happens.

I wasn't critisising the N3DS, sorry if that's what it looked like. I mentioned the exclusive game because even with that it didn't fracture the install base and it did not get the negative response that some people are giving the PS4K right now. So as you agree, the N3DS did not create problems and neither would a PS4K.

We will have to wait and see what happens, though i would not be surprised if at the announcement Sony would make a concrete promise that there will be no PS4K exclusives. It would definitely take away concerns from many PS4 owners.

Even if Sony made this promise and kept it, they could only speak for themselfes. So any of the 3rd party developers could still decide to make an exclusive PS4K game.

It's the other way around. The concern is for what consoles stand for, ease of use, stability, guaranteed performance, unified userbase, and they gladly trade in some performance and visuals compared to PC for that.

Growing the user base faster with a cheaper slim version and sticking to one hardware spec will do more good for quality and quantity of games than adding a different spec.  A PS4K will slow down the growth of the user base and will add costs to game development.

Dunno what the outrage is exactly.

It's quite clear in my mind that the PS4K is almost entirely being made so that the PS4 can compete with PC on VR. I think that's pretty much the only reason. Developers won't do too much more in terms of graphics because they won't want to ditch that 40 million userbase.

Ultimately it doesn't matter what, you can't please them all.

There is not outrage. Sony can do anything and people will still idolatrate them.

This. In fact, I've seen excitement, not outrage.

There is barely any outrage. You're just in the echo chamber with a vocal minority.

Also, the thing about not being able to see higher than 24fps is a flat out lie. And it will hurt the OG PS4. Just not its sales.

That much we know. Bur that probably isn't what SEGA was thinking would happen. If you think from the PoV of someone that got the PS4 already, it will be an extra 400€/$. Its not too different.

It's time to face it. Upgrades and peripherals just don't work. They never have. I don't see why it should start now.

It won't be an extra $400 because they can sell their 'old' PS4. Also this is nothing new, there have been updated versions of game systems before for example Nintendo DSI and N3DS. And N3DS actually has exclusive games.

The alternative would have been a more powerfull day one PS4 for $600. However that would have come with more technical malfunctions just like we hade with Xbox 360 and PS3. In fact, a PS4 with a gpu as powerfull as is rumoured for the PS NEO in an APU(one chip) design wasn't even possible in 2013.

I think a cheaper launch console and a upgraded model for those who want it later on is the better approach.

Err... yes, its not new. That was the point. The new 3DS isn't exactly a sucess and people get pissed when a game gets released for it that runs like crap on the old 3DS.

Really... there is nothing to gain from this. Sony is shooting themselves in the foot. Not only won't it be a sucess, as it will lower the perceived value of the ps4, the ps5 vanilla launch and will reward them with bad press everytime a game runs better or is exclusive to this new ps4K. There is literally nothing but long term losses in this. I think they are crazy.

Anyone that upgrades to the new PS4 model will sell their current one for cheap, creating the same effect as a price cut without Sony having to cut into their margins. Also a new product is always good for sales. It will increase the PS4 install base even faster meaning more software sales and PS Plus subscriptions for Sony.

I would say making more money is a perfectly good reason for Sony to do this, and it gives gamers more choice to boot.
