It won't be an extra $400 because they can sell their 'old' PS4. Also this is nothing new, there have been updated versions of game systems before for example Nintendo DSI and N3DS. And N3DS actually has exclusive games.

The alternative would have been a more powerfull day one PS4 for $600. However that would have come with more technical malfunctions just like we hade with Xbox 360 and PS3. In fact, a PS4 with a gpu as powerfull as is rumoured for the PS NEO in an APU(one chip) design wasn't even possible in 2013.

I think a cheaper launch console and a upgraded model for those who want it later on is the better approach.

Err... yes, its not new. That was the point. The new 3DS isn't exactly a sucess and people get pissed when a game gets released for it that runs like crap on the old 3DS.

Really... there is nothing to gain from this. Sony is shooting themselves in the foot. Not only won't it be a sucess, as it will lower the perceived value of the ps4, the ps5 vanilla launch and will reward them with bad press everytime a game runs better or is exclusive to this new ps4K. There is literally nothing but long term losses in this. I think they are crazy.

Anyone that upgrades to the new PS4 model will sell their current one for cheap, creating the same effect as a price cut without Sony having to cut into their margins. Also a new product is always good for sales. It will increase the PS4 install base even faster meaning more software sales and PS Plus subscriptions for Sony.

I would say making more money is a perfectly good reason for Sony to do this, and it gives gamers more choice to boot.
