you know that almost nobody in Japan is actually paying the retail price right? This is true even on day 1. It's not like in the US at least i know that. Lets take even the top selling game on there, you can easily get it for 5390 on amazon or 5508 at yamada denki but you are using a 6998 yen price.

this is true for every physical game, around the world. Whats your point?

no it's not, I don't know where you're from but you can't just go into any store in the US and get a game that came out anytime recently discounted 25%.  You can easily do that in Japan.  It's like that in every store in Japan, it's not some kind of special deal.

Why would you discount a fresh retail game? You lose any profit that way. It makes no sense. In the US, you can buy pretty much any game used so you can get a game lower than retail price.

Competition between competing stores. There are 2 big players and like 2-3 minor players here in Australia. So while RRP is $99 and EB Games will charge that the others charge anywhere from $69-$99 to try and get customers to buy from them instead. Despite games seemingly being expensive here compared to the US I can often pay the same as the US does because of this.

I'm sure they have a much higher profit margin built into the retail price in Japan, so they are able to discount it a lot more and say it's a sale.  I mean that's reguar practice with clothes in the US, nobody is gonna pay $40 for a t-shirt but hey it's 50% off now so it must be a good deal.  These retailers still have to compete with each other to sell the game even if the retail price is higher, so they have to try to get the lowest price possible whie maximizing profit.

really is it like that in australia too?  I mean in the US you have to wait a month or so before you can see any kind of minor price drop at all, on nintendo 1st party games it may never drop in price though.

you can walk in ANY store in Japan and get the game discounted big day 1.  It's a fact, i used to live there I know.  Do you need me to point you to every major store in the US that is carrying pretty much every new game at full price?  You have to pay $30 to join the club to get the discount at best buy, it's not free and most people don't know about it or don't do it.  I'm done responding about this, it's not a big deal but you are flat out wrong.  You can go to wal-mart, target, best buy, gamestop, toys r us.  They all have their new games at $60.

In The Netherlands I pre order my games usually for €50-you just got to know the places to do that, so Japan ain't that special. For our Dutchies and Belgium friends check out yourgamezone.nl if you are going to pre-order something it can save a few bugs. Dark souls is available for pre order over there at €51 instead of the usual €65-€70- they ask at our major shops like mediamarkt, bol.com, gamemania, nedgame etc.
