It's because Sony and Microsoft stupidly waited so long to release new consoles. Had the PS4 and Xbox One launched in 2010 and 2011, games like Minecraft and TLOU would have defined the 8th generation but instead, alot of IP had to launch at the end of the 7th, which meant slim pickings for the next consoles.

There's still time though... even though I don't think we're going to see much more than copy and paste from them. Nintendo, with Splatoon, is the only company that really did something unique, new and fresh. At least up until this point.

Unique, new and fresh. They just turned the Unfinished Swan into a multiplayer game.

Art isn't about reinventing the wheel. It's about looking at the wheel and making it FEEL new again.

Why is Wii Sports missing from this thread's title?

It is not strictly about those titles; It may very well be.

Why are people mentioning sequels?

Also, I would put Mass Effect up there with UC and Gears.

The funny thing is Uncharted:DF was only a modestly received and OK selling game. It became a generation defining franchise with Uncharted 2.

The problem we have with finding something new and amazing is that the technological leap between 7th and 8th gen was not as great as between 6th and 7th gen. This makes it harder to make games that are generation defining in the way of bringing something obviously big and new to console gaming that just was not there in the 7th gen. In many ways, the 8th gen is really just the 7th gen with better graphics.

Is Horizon going to be a whole lot different to Skyrim in their core elements? The world might be more detailed with cooler robot monsters. But ultimately it doesn't look like being a genre or generation defining game. Perhaps it will being something new and amazing to the table, but I'm thinking it will simply be a great game that still fits quite neatly into the open world RPG box.

In some what what could define this generation is the evolution of indie games that have a AAA look and feel. No Man's sky looks to be a bit like that. Made by a 15 person indie studio, but has big ambitions and has a AAA look about it. Can smaller studios put out AAA type content on a budget? If they can put out AAA type games at a fraction of the AAA dev costs and put them on the market for $30 or $40 then that really shakes up the industry. I know No Man's Sky is a full $60 retail release but there's a lot of scope for big and bold indie games to come in at a lower price.

Drake's Fortune was modestly received? It has a 90% on GR and 89 on MC. And had sold 2.6M before Uncharted 2 came out.

I guess splatoon for now. It has the potential to spawn a great franchise if ninty handle the sequel well. So yeah splatoon is definately fits the bill.

Nothing more gen defining than Wii Sports last gen.

It even spawned clones on rival consoles.

You do not buy console for tekken, you want to buy console for Soul Calibur... even if you switch sides - that is the game that made you do it. You too are too picky about my examples (SC)... Have you seen SC when it came out?

Tekken 3 was, as of Feb 2014, the second best selling fighting game of all time, with 8.3 Million sales worldwide.

That was the biggest fighting game of the generation. So I'm sure it sold some consoles.
However, on such a successful platform as PlayStation 1, with games like Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid, it's more difficult to be "the game that sells a console".

And yes I did see, and play, Soul Calibur when it first came out. I did the same for it's predecessor, Soul Edge (Blade). Are you trying to pull the age card again? Or are you looking for my impression of it?
Since I had already played Soul Edge, along with other fighting games with a focus on weapons such as Bushido Blade, and Samurai Showdown, I was already quite familiar with the concept. However, it's never been to my liking to block using a button instead of holding back, and I prefer fighting games without a strong focus on weapons like this. Though I did still enjoy playing it, and SC2 and 3 as well.

I'm not being picky about it. It's just that Tekken 3 set the benchmark for 3D fighting, and is still today the best selling 3D fighting game.

You may very well be right, well live google; but you see it is not strictly about a number (it is not a single dimensional threshold, spark threshold is hyperspace territory), it may have sold even better than other classics - I acknowledge its quality.(Kinect sold... how many units?)

I was just curious who is the person behind the androginic avatar, the person who always plays it safe. No harm or dissrespect intended.

What was my assumption?

"You do not buy console for tekken" - TimCliveroller.

That.

Dont you see the beautiful in the phrase? The wisdom? Yet you interpret it as I was referring to you. It had an almost clerical vibe to it.

It's Destiny. In terms of ever greater online integration it's clearly the trend. And as with Gears and Uncharted, most of the foundations were already there with the previous generation.

Many would argue being multigenerational is perfectly representative of this generation due to the general lack of system bound transformations. Meanwhile online integration is generation independent... Honestly watch dogs isn't a bad example either.

Just want to add this thread derailed to a complete personal opinion thread as there are no definitions which I tough there was before.

Oh, and Tekken 3 beats anything from Soul Calibur so badly it's not even funny.
Tekken 3 is on a completely different level with Street Fighter 2.

IMO Tekken 3 is still the most impactul 3D fighting game ever, even as Virtual Fighter did it before, it was Tekken 3 that fueled the real transition of such a stabilished genre 2D fighting games was up until it.

Ok, I've got it - you've got this obsession with this nice game, changes will be performed.

Have you seen the changes I made?

Gears of War 4, Uncharted 4, and Tekken 7 will all release this year.
