Ah tbone, don't be mad because Splatoon, a new IP, is putting to shame the flop called DK Tropical Freeze.

Don't start getting specific.

This is what really matters:

While the artstyle is certainly good, those visuals are still outdated. Especially if you pick a common map like this an analyze it:

When you think about computing power in 2016, all three consoles games are outdated.

Im  not mad at all. I want splatoon to outsell everything. Ironically it has a chance to be the 2nd highest selling wiiu game. That said only person mad is you. Still thinking dk is a failure when it's probably around 1.5mil lifetime

It failed to move consoles. It failed to be a worthy game to discuss (sales wise). Splatoon has put to shame. Less time in development, a smaller team and it made a bigger splash. What a terrible decision to make another unasked DK game. Don't you think?

Splatoon is going to sell more copies and move more Wii U hardware than Zelda U. Which reminds me of an old thing: Once Zelda U has failed, you will have to admit that the Wii U itself is a big problem. Then again, you might have already come to realize that. Have you?

Zelda has failed after Twilight Princess. But that is not because the Wii U. If the Wii U was a problem, MK8 wouldn't have reach 7M surpassing already Double Dash.

In the case of Zelda, the problem is the terrible management behind it, long cycles, and Aonuma's obssession to be contrary to what people is asking for. Splatoon is going to outsell Zelda HD and I be there to point how Aonuma is not only lazy, but terrible from a financial pov.

Of course, those are terrible bussiness decisions, like DK TF.

So basically Retro is screwed then, cause no matter what game they make it'd be considered a terrible decision by your rules.

While Tropical Freeze may be absolutely brilliant for what it is, (and in my humble opinion one of the best 2D platformers ever made) the sad truth is that it's simply not what gamers wanted from the first HD project by the makers of Metroid Prime.

People used to be immensely hyped to see what Retro would do next, they were seen as a studio that could do no wrong. There is nowhere near as much excitement surrounding them now, because gamers are wary of being disappointed again.

Donkey Kong never was that popular of a game anyways.

Donkey Kong Country: 9.3 million

Donkey Kong Country Returns: 6.97 million

Donkey Kong 64: 5.27 million

Yep.

I mean, they used a modified version of Unreal Engine 2.5... that's sad.

Source?

While I have heard that Prime ran on a heavily modified Unreal Engine 2 code base, I don't recall any word on Tropical Freeze's engine.

Splatoon got marketing.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Retro is extremely talented. What this reveals is that Nintendo needs to allow their best Western studio (and one of their best in general) have freedom to make a western style game. Splatoon proves that genres that are popular out here that Nintendo hasn't done before, with a Nintendo flavor added to them, can both do well out here and in Japan. Xenoblade X and Splatoon should show Nintendo that they should embrace genres that they haven't paid much attention to in the past. There is money to be made!
