Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony may have been "overly ambitious", warns Pachter

sony is a corporation more big that his gaming division, why they have to lose more and more money with price cuts? this is not a sports situation, this is a bussines, if sony put a price cut and the things dont change, worst thing could happen to the Sony corp, with many losses the play station 3 right now is like a cancer or a disease to sony corp, remember that the playstation 3 now have the lowest price in japan (have the price cut that many americans hope right now) but cant push the ps3.

So basically Sony can cut their prices and ruin themselves or they can stay at 600$ and ruin their console business...

This is one of the worst situations a console manufacturer ever was in. Without any real Blockbuster games in 2007 (Stop saying "Lair" now...one week above 40k in the US is not going to save anything. And 40k is very optimistic...very...) Sony will lose even more money and even more marketshare to their competitiors. If May is weaker than April for Sony (and it will be, because Japan numbers are declining, US numbers too and the last bit of european Launch hype is gone now) we should really askourselves what could happen next? I remember a post from a Sony fan: "If the PS3 drops below 100k a month they are in real trouble." And he meant US. Well they are in trouble now, aren´t they?

There´s just one reason Sony Computer Entertainment is still alive and that´s the other Sony devisions... basically the PS3 is a Gamecube with Final Fantasy instead of Mario and Metal Gear instead of Metroid... but without Zelda. And with a 600$ price point.

Sony, open your eyes! This is not about "winning" anymore, this is about survive - and you won´t if you don´t think of a new direction...

"ahead of their time" I can agree with that. So was Dreamcast. Too much, too soon. Should have ditched either bluray or cell. That would have allowed them to be competitive with 360 out of the gate.

CD was ahead of it time ?

Dreamcast used a proprietary format, that nearly doubled the capacity. However, if they had just waited, they could have taken advantage of DVD's even higher capacity and film playback. So the Dreamcast did jump the gun.

As for CDs, it wasn't jumping the gun as much as crappy games. The Turbo Grafix CD just played 16-bit games with cut scenes and better sound, and that actually allowed the system to last years in Japan. The Sega CD, CDi, and 3DO all tried weak 3D or FMV games, which were shoddy predecessors to full polygon graphics.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

didnt that guy say like 2 weeks ago that PS3 was going to win?

Pretty much..  http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=16061&ncid=AOLGAM000500000000007

That 207 page report isn't worth the harddrive space it's written on.

yeah sony is over-ambitious! Right now they fell past the 10K a week in Japan(8K). And it isn't much better in the US and Europe. If I were sony, I would launch a stripped down PS3 just for games, maintain a $600 for a ps3 with just the 60GB HDD as a extra and start selling the 60GB + blu-ray drive for $800. Then they would at least make profit... Gamecube made profit...

They can't strip the BRD drive or the HD from the PS3 without breaking already released games. There's not much else they can remove to make it significantly cheaper to make.

then they are pretty screwed if they ever want to make profit AND sell units.

Stringer's already promised a 5% profit margin for '07. A big price cut on the PS3 will make that goal very difficult. If he doesn't deliver on on that promise, shareholders will be very unhappy.

again try to know before posting.

the PP of a ps3 has gone way below 600$ at the moment.

google for various japanese articles on THE PRESENT ps3 price breakdown.

We all know that ps3 is the winner next gen .

It is just a matter of time before the onslaught starts.

SONY has made 1.2 billion dollars in profit OVERALL....so theres no need to worry with BIG GUNS coming out from JUNE 2007.

x360 was the loser in april,2007.

out of 174 k x360s sold 67k were elites.

without a next gen player +massively watered down Xenon +no wifi .....x360 should have cost 300$ at best.

it all comes down to pc vs ps3.

although Cell beats any pc core(dua/quad/single) by 10:1

PCs have the edge in terms of graphics card.

BUT CELL can also do all graphical tasks so it all comes down to ps3 vs ps3

larry are you a bit? Nobody in the right mind can honestly think that way.
