My advice is the same advice I give anyone who hasn't played any franchise. Start with the first and work your way through them as they released. It's the only way you can appreciate the franchise as much as the rest of us who did the same thing. Going out of order will forever taint your ability to objectively critique each game.

Unfortunately, this is a fairly unrealistic endeavor. Particularly the early releases are just too difficult to find (unless I want to play the iOS ports which I assume are garbage). Or I could spend like $90 to buy FFI & FFII on GBA. I'm just not willing to put in that sort of investment. Also, in order to play like, XI & XII, I'd have to buy a PS2. For XIII I'd have to buy a PS3. It's just not worth it.

I didn't know money was an issue. If that's the case, personally, I'd still buy the first game and then wait to move on when I have the money. But, it was just advice. Do whatever you want.

It's not that money is an issue....

Of course I could if I wanted to, but I just think it's crazy to go back and buy like 2 consoles (at least) and also close to $100 for 20+ year old games.

Sometimes I forget that stuff because I own all those old consoles lol. For me, I just have to buy the cart.

Around the Network

There are more than a few good starting points.
4 is pretty straightforward, minimal customization or party management.
6 is phenomenal, but there is a lot more party management.
7 is also phenomenal, but less management required than 6.
9 would be a good starting point, but I hate it, so there.
10 is amazing, but it doesn't play like a classic (ie, the majority) Final Fantasy.

So I say either 4 or 7.

Ok TC, I read that money isn't an issue as long as you don't have to pay outrages amounts for old games.

So if you like VII (which you're playing right now?) and get interested in the series; get a cheap used PSP or PS2.

With PS2 you get access to (through backwards compatibility) to FF I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, then X, X-2, VII Dirge Of Cerberus, and XII.

With a PSP, you get access to (digitally) I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, and IX. Physically there are enhanced versions of I, II, IV (includes the sequel and a prologue that ties in to the sequel), Tactis, and a prequel to VII: Crisis Core.

XIII trilogy is bound to be ported to PS4.

And for Wii U and your 3DS, get the Crystal Chronicles spin offs, they're all very good! Backwards compatibility will allow you to play those four titles (the two Wii Ware games are not necessary).

With 3DS you can also play III, the 3D version of IV, the sequel to XII: Revenant Wings, the sequel to Tactics Advance (now on the VC!), and The Four Heroes Of Light.

Too much FF7 and X, so I will counter with the FF6!!! >: D

But FF9 > 6

o: ...but I thought 8 was your fav, or was that only Wrighty?

8 is my fave, doesn't mean 9 isn't very very close though. Maybe when the Steam version finally gets released and I play it again it may even move up the rankings

o: I see. Well, as it stands, FF6 is still my all time fav FF xD

Thanks for all that! Yup I started VII on PS4. Liking it so far! I was thinking of playing X HD after that. I suppose I may consider getting an old PS2 if I REALLY like them, but I'm not sure yet. Maybe a dumb question, but do you know how the iOS ports are for the older games?

The iOS ports are handled really well and are very clear and beautiful. Get them if you dont mind their price

I'd start with VII. It's easy to pick up and play and has good pacing, two things that I think people often overlook and can have a big bearing to someone just coming into a franchise.

I would say start at the beginning, I did, but I'm also 32 :P

The original ones are kind of dated now, but 6 is amazing for a SNES game. Great graphics, memorable, likable characters, huge world with an epic story. First time I played such an incredibly in depth game.

Though 6 is my top choice, 7, 9 and 12 are all really high caliber too. 10 and 13 are a little corny and flashy for my taste. Honestly though, they all have their own unique charm, despite my personal opinion. Been playing them my whole life.

I'm old school. I say start with FF1. Actually, I say this for more reasons than one, but to best appreciate the genre and its finest series, you should begin with the game that created it. Then allow yourself to grow with the series from there. I had the updated version on PSP and it was solid. I recommend it to start.

Final Fantasy X HD for PS4 or Vita is the best starting point. The bosses are challenging enough if you are inexperienced, but easy to overcome once you come up with a better strategy or grind.
