Forums - Nintendo - Is Nintendo going to be mainstream again?

Nintendo is mainstream ok, I know. what I mean is "hey, let's play Nes or SNES" or "hey, let's play wii (for better or for worse)" mainstream

right now the PS brand is the "1985-1995 Nintendo" of this era and COD is the "mario" of this era.

Can Nintendo NX be the next SNES (not the next wii please) and what they would have to do to achieve that. Can they create a new formula (like the wii for the family and friends) but  not for the family and friends, something more hardcore. Or maybe steal some of the current market.

I would apreciate a "what" "why" and "how" not just hating comments like "no, nintendo is doomed because i hate them" or fanboy comments like "yes, Nintendo is Nintendo" but hey, it's not a rule.

so, what's up! :)

Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Pokémon are all 10+ million sellers, they still certainly have strong mainstream appeal, I can't think of a single other developer/publisher that has that many huge franchises.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

The odds of Nintendo screwing up next gen are far higher than they should be, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that if Nintendo does everything very well and up to expectations, then they will at the very least do better than the Xbox brand in the 9th gen. Strength of 1st party IP + 3rd party games + a good presence in Japan = Very, Very Good.

bet: lost

Indeed. IPs aren't really the problem, but offputting hardware sure was this generation.

Yep and even despite those mistakes in terms of hardware design and marketing direction, their IP still have sold incredibly well this generation.

They have wonderful franchise and I think they will be very, very successful with mobile games, but I think the next-generation is going to shift Nintendo into more of a media and app company.

NX will do well enough to generate good profit, but it won't necessarily have to carry the company.

With regards to dedicated home consoles, in think there in particular they are in tough and unless they have a very special idea that drives massive hardware adoption, they probably are not going to be a real threat. The home console business belongs to Playstation and probably will stay that way unless Sony makes a major screw up.

They could have success with movies too if they are handled correctly but that's a big if.

I think as well the portable line will continue to see erosion because of kids growing up with cheap tablets/free games as their go to portable, but hopefully they don't drop below 50 million units (portable).

If they can keep the portbale around 50 million sold and the console chips in with 15-20 million, that should be enough to make a nice sized profit with a unified platform, combine that with smartphone apps potentially pulling in big money, that should be good enough to see the company through another 6-8 years.

I argue Nintendo is still pretty mainstream today thanks to the 3DS. Although facing the lowest handheld sales for Nintendo, the 3DS is still mainstream for its incredible software sales. Pokemon XY/ORAS, 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7 have around 10 million sales. And if you look at Smash Bros 3DS, its sales are are approaching Melee's numbers which was really popular even in the PS2 era.

Its just the console that's becoming more niche. But still, Mario Kart 8 has around 5 million sales compared to Doube Dash's 7 million and Splatoon's ~4 million sales is a massive success for a new Nintendo IP since the Wii/Brain Age series (which are dead) or Pikmin.

nope, unless they figure out a way to get people to give a damn about there consoles, doesnt matter how much software they sell, they always sell software.

Only Pokemon and Mario  are 10+ million sellers.

Animal Crossing is Irregular (3-10 millions)

Mario Kart and Smash are 5+ million sellers

Splatoon and Zelda are 4+ million sellers

Metroid 2+ million seller

Kirby, Donkey Kong, Yoshi are 1+ million sellers

Why should a publisher's relevance be based entirely on hardware when they stil sell incredible great software to millions of fans and newcomers alike?

I think he meant by 3DS sales of those IPs.

Though I don't think they're really distinct audiences for these IP. 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, probably have a ton of overlap for example and even other IPs ... I would probably wager most people who like Animal Crossing like ... Mario too.

If Nintendo had six 10 million selling IP exclusive and they were Mario, Final Fantasy, Uncharted, Star Wars, and FIFA or something that would certainly draw very different demographics.
