I argue Nintendo is still pretty mainstream today thanks to the 3DS. Although facing the lowest handheld sales for Nintendo, the 3DS is still mainstream for its incredible software sales. Pokemon XY/ORAS, 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7 have around 10 million sales. And if you look at Smash Bros 3DS, its sales are are approaching Melee's numbers which was really popular even in the PS2 era.
Its just the console that's becoming more niche. But still, Mario Kart 8 has around 5 million sales compared to Doube Dash's 7 million and Splatoon's ~4 million sales is a massive success for a new Nintendo IP since the Wii/Brain Age series (which are dead) or Pikmin.
