Forums - Movies & TV - Top 5 Things I Disliked About SW:TFA

I wasn't sure I was going to like his character from the trailers, but I ended up really liking him.  And yea, I think that would have been nice twist.  Someone trained and raised to be a Stormtropper to destroy those who oppose the NO, including Jedis, actually turns out to be a Jedi.  I think they are going to make Rey Luke's daughter, one he dropped off before going into exile.  They think they'll be clever for doing it, but I say it's lazy.

I agree with this as well. I found myself rooting for Finn pretty early on, and grew bored of Rey. I'm hoping he gets more focus in the next few movies, or Rey gets fleshed out a little more. And if she is Luke's daughter...I really hope they don't pretend like no one saw it coming, since it seems like the most obvious 'twist' they can use.

I never watched Legend of Korra, but I can see what you mean with your second to last point. I'm all for more female characters...I just wish this one was more interesting. Giving her everything in the beginning really keeps me from forming a connection with the character. Sure she was cool to watch...but I suppose I need more than that to really care about a character.

5. I didn't think it was that bad. The prequels had so much of it I was expecting a lot worse.

4. Did you miss the part where she touched Luke's lightsaber? I think it would be obvious that she's connected to Luke and the Jedi in some way. It's not as if Leia can go considering she's a General. That only really leaves Chewie, but he doesn't have any link to the Force to help him in the search.

3. This is probably the most ridiculous complaint about the film I've read. It's like people need to have everything immediately fed to them on a platter instead of thinking things through. There are another two films to come in the trilogy whilst some of the questions you asked can be answered by paying attention to the film and others are there for you to develop theories for the next film(s).

2. I got the feeling Ren was far more immature in training than he initially appeared and I wouldn't be surprised to find Rey has had training as a young child (fan theory!). I don't think Snoke really trained him particularly other than to use his anger. In all the interactions with Snoke I got the impression Ren was powerful but ultimately very immature in his training.

1. OK, I actually get this one. I also kinda understand why they decided to do it in this way. It's not so much a complete remake as a huge nostalgia trip that also serves to pass the torch for the next two films. May have borrowed a bit too much though.

So, things I would have changed.

Not crushed everything into one movie.  Elements of these movies should have been in spread out throughout the 3 movies.  It's fine if you want an ultra Death Star, but save it for the last movie.  Have it where the Empire had started building it in the beginning of their reign, but abandonned it in favor of a smaller, mobile Death Star.  Ren should have been searching for it and trying to get it operational.

And the NO shouldn't have been so large and established.  It really should have been Kylo Ren in charge of a small faction starting to rebuild the Empire.  Taking over whatever remnants remained.  No Snoke.  As far as him being Han's son, I could go either way.  If not, have him an ancient Sith who wants revenge for the death of the Emperor.  It would explain the crudeness of his saber.  If so, save the reveal of him being his son til the end of the first movie.  I also think his face should have been a little more messed up, cause when he takes off the mask and it's an untouched Adam Driver, it takes away from his character.  Makes him seem more like a poser.

If Rey was going to be a Jedi, show her being able to tap into into the Force a little while she is living on her own.  Moving little things with a decent amount of effort.  Or her subtley changing peoples minds without really knowing she's doing it.  And if you want her being able to take on Ren in a lightsaber battle, have someone train her.  Maybe even Finn.  He was a Stormtrooper, so he must have been given weapons training.  Or actually have Luke around, since it is out of his character to have abandoned everyone, including his sister and best friend, to live on some island while they had to deal with the New Order.   Or have Finn the Jedi.  Former Stormtrooper turned Jedi has definitely not been done before.

5.  For the most part it was good.  Just those 2 I mentioned stood out as just ok (Kanata) and poor (Snoke.)

4.  They had an exact map to him (for some God unknown reason), so no one who had a link to the Force was necessary.  And I think Leia would have gone no matter what position she is.  I mean she was a Princess in the OG trilogy.  Did that stop her from joining the Rebellion?  Or anything that happened in those movies?  Nope.  And this is her brother.  One she hasn't seen in years.

3. When you have to argue in hyperbole, then you have already lost.  No one wants it spoon fed to them.  They just want something.  This movie didn't hint at things for us to fill in, it merely left things blank.  And fan theories are fine if they are trying to fill in grey areas that are hinted at.  However, they are not fine when they are covering up for poor and/or absentee writing, filling in black spaces the sequels most likely won't address. That's what fanboys have been doing for the prequels for years, trying to act as if they are not poorly written.

2.  Even if she had training as a child, that would have only been for about 3-4 years, if she started around 4 or 5.  She has forgotten it completely by the time the movie started, so about 15 years of not using it.  So, there is no way she should have mastered it so quickly even when she was training.  Unless they want to do another LOK thing where she masters everthing at a very young age, which is BS.  Not even Anakin, who the prequels made Jedi Jesus mastered the Force at such a young age.  So, girl power it is?

Yeah, why did they send Rey to meet with Luke? That made no sense at all. Abrams wanted her to do everything of importance in this movie.

I didn't like Finn either - his motivations were weak and he had zero character development.

How the hell did the first order get so big while the rebels got in an even worst position? Didn't they won the war, shouldn't other civilization/planets send them troops too fight the remnant of the empire? Instead we get the first order who is powerful enough to change an entire planet into a weapon and the rebels apparently lost all their ships because they only send a handful of X-wings to fight an entire army.

You would think after winning a major war, the rebels wouldn't still be rebels but be the new military power house of the galaxy, but nooooooo it got to be david vs goliath again.

I'm going to make a very easy prediction, we will find out in the next 2 movies thay Rey is actually a princess on her planet and her parents send her to that desert planet to hide her from a guy who is allied with the first order.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

5. The new characters. Especially Kylo.
4. The old characters beeing useless. They were all broken and useless for many years. Luke never tried fixing his mistake, the separation of Leia and Han. Both difficult to buy.
3. The planet weapon. The way it sucked energy from the sun aka requires a black hole's power of gravity that apparantly doesnt affect the planet.
2. Not enough Explained.
1. Copy of episode 4.

Bonus round!!! Magically splitting planetart weapon beam! Like seriously... WTF?

Wow, these  5 reasons and the OP's 5 reasons are my main complaints!

Top 5:

1. Disney
2. Disney
3. Disney
4. Disney
5. Disney

More serious (while the above list is also true, in my opinion):

Top 5 in no particular order:

1. It tries to be funny which is kind of new to Star Wars (that includes Jar Jar).

Sure, the cinema laughed which means it was to appeal to masses but seriously, the "take off your mask, can't hear shit"-moment was just atmosphere destroying and many moments like this, I hated while watching.

Thanks, Disney.

2. BB8.

Yes, thing is cute but in a different way R2 was. It's clearly something Disney "invented". At least it didn't dance and sing.

3. Rey.

Anakin was too old, told by Yoda, to be trained. Luke was even way older and got trained, Rey doesn't even need any training. Sense? Mass appeal.

4. The Nazi Scene.

How bad was this, actually? I mean, it's nice to talk in pictures but this was so obvious and in the face... Well, mass appeal and to make it understand for everyone.

5. Carrie Fisher.

Why didn't she die instead of Han/Harrison? Seriosuly, she didn't express anything. Acting power, emotions... nothing. NOTHING. Totally unneeded.

The moment Poe said "so who talks first" or similar, I knew we were looking at some Marvel movie with quips and such.

I didn't really have five problems. Overall it's a enjoyable 7.5-8/10 type of film.

I think what could have improved the film would have been a visible Sith to mentor Kylo Ren. Like wouldn't that have been more interesting? The "rule of 2" was so stupid anyway, why have a "dark Obi-Wan" type figure, a philosopher in the Force who is a Dark Jedi training Kylo and insisting that he is struggling with the light side. I think that would have been a neat idea. Snoke can remain as the higher up. I would like to have seen more about the philosophy of the Force but from the Dark POV. I think it would ground Kylo Ren's motives moreso too other than "oh hey it's another bratty Skywalker/Solo with authority issues".

Then maybe Snoke betrays this Sith master character at the end of TFA and has him killed. That would be an interesting idea I think.

I think I would staged the Luke scene a little differently too, it was a bit awkward with him just standing there on a clear day ... I'd have had him shrouded in mist with his figure visible, Rey holds out the lightsaber, Luke walks out of the mist taking off his hood and the last shot is him talking the lightsaber and holding it in his hands, as if realizing his old power. That would've been pretty cool.

I think too they needed to maybe "show" the Force calling out to Rey more often. Like even a small rumble of bass in the soundtrack as she's piloting the ship or doing the mind trick, I think some audience members needed this spelled out for them very directly and JJ played the "well maybe Finn is the Jedi not Rey!" card too hard. It's fairly obvious half-way through the movie she's going to be the Jedi, so trying to keep it under wraps doesn't really work dramatically.

I wouldn't have minded maybe a QUICK blurb about the politics of the galaxy (as what is the Resistance to the Republic, how powerful is the First Order, etc.) but I can understand after the prequels why they were terrified of getting bogged down in that.

I think also the movie maybe should have stayed with Rey a little more on Jakku at the beginning. No offence to Finn, but if he isn't the central character arc (and he isn't), then I think his role could've been trimmed a bit in the beginning to focus more on Rey's life. It was really interested to see her scavenge through deserted Star Destroyers and she lives alone in and shelled out Imperial Walker. This IS interesting! It creates empathy for your lead character!  Don't cut away so quickly. Let the story breathe a little here. This character concept and the visuals it evokes are fantastic and emotional. Stay with her! We should feel her lonliness. That was a great idea, I think they cut it too short.
