Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation Exec Defends PS2-on-PS4 Price Points

They need an upgrade program. The price might be justified towards people who don't have those games at all, but if you make someone pay €15 for a game with just uprendered 1080p and Trophies while they already have the game on PS2 or PS3 it's nothing but a blatant rip-off.

*fixed, Big big difference.

They're charging for the uprendering and trophies, not for the games. People have to decide if that's worth their money or if they want to keep using their PS2/PS3 to play those games.

I honestly don't see the issue with these prices but that may be because I don't care that much about a game's age. I've happily shelled out €7 for GBA titles because I think games like M&L Superstar Saga, Aria of Sorrow and Advance Wars are great games well worth the asking price. €10 for Donkey Kong 64 and Super Mario 64? Ka-ching. €10, that's about what some current gen games have cost me and if I have any regrets it's not because of those N64 titles.

If I had a PS4 I'd pay €15 for Final Fantasy XII and Valkyrie Profile 2 without blinking.

It's not about buying old games for 10€ or 15€, it's about having to pay for the same game twice or, if you're even more loyal to the company, three times.

Yeah...I really don't get that logic. You're buying it three times for three different systems.

It's a shitty customer service, especially when the competition does it better. Simple as that. On top of that a "PS3 version" of a PS2 game is just an 1:1 emulation, so you basically paid a fee to play the exact same game you already had. Now on PS4 you get a little upgrade, but I bet most customers would've rather taken the option to use full backwards compatibility with all their PS2 games with no extra cost, than having to buy an extremely limited amount of slightly upgraded games they already possess.

Also your own Blu-Ray comparison fails as Blu-Ray players can play DVDs, so you don't need to get the Blu-Ray version of a movie (whether it should be free or not).

PlayStation president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has spoken out to defend the price points for the company's PlayStation 2 games on PlayStation 4. The first batch of games available now cost $10-$15, which some deemed to be pretty pricey.

He said on a recent PlayStation Nation podcast that the emulation technology (which can get the PS2 games running at 1080p/60 FPS) as well as the implementation for PS4 features like Trophies and Share functionality, doesn't necessarily come cheap. There also also licensing and quality assurance costs.

"We are also able to add Trophies; some people really care about Trophies," he said. "So we can provide that. And it takes some time for our staff and QA and licensing and everything to bring back these games. So it takes us time and cost. So we felt that we should charge."

Yoshida went on to say that of course the PS2-to-PS4 emulation technology cannot bring classic games up to the graphical standards of contemporary counterparts. But the improvements are good enough so that you can play a 20-40 hour role-playing game and not grow tired of the experience, he said.

It's possible price points will come down in time, but this is not confirmed. You can already save on one of the games, PaRappa the Rapper 2 if you're a PlayStation Plus member ($7.50 instead of $10).

In addition to PaRappa the Rapper 2 (which arrived just this week), Sony has confirmed that The King of Fighters 2000 will be added later. Rockstar's Max Payne might also be on the way, though this is not confirmed.

Earlier this month, Yoshida said Sony will work "tirelessly" to release even more PS2 games for PS4 "on a regular basis." The company is also asking for your suggestions for which games should be added.

Well, then Sony shouldn't do it in the first place. I never care about backward compatibility and remastered anyways... The Last of Us was my only exception, since i just love the game so much.

IMHO, Sony should stop this BC and Remastered ASAP. The jokes of "RemasteredStation" is now starting to become real :(.

Yeah, I figured the extras they added, like trophy support and improved visual performance would bump up the prices on these games by a couple of bucks. Personally, I don't have too much of an issue with the price, though I still wouldn't buy any of the games unless I really wanted them.

Lol most good PS2 games second hand go for around $15-20 on Ebay. How much do people expect the digital PS2 downloads to cost? 3 cents?

That people want things for free is no surprise.  That people feel entitled to things for free is kind of sad.

Exactly. No one was promised that the PS4 could play PS2 disks at any point in time but select individuals want to play the PS2 digital counterparts on PS4 for free simply because they own the original physical copy(usable only on PS2 and early PS3 consoles, not PS4).

I understand there are costs, but they're definitely not high enough to warrant a price that's 25% of a brand-new 8th gen game. And since the emulation is there, disc games should work, with or without the enhancements. Sony is doing this only because they can.

You guys have double standards and its funny. If the situation was reversed and its was MS doing this, you guys would be all over them. Sony for the GAMERS right?

I don't mind the $10-15 prices, not a huge deal to be honest, especially when some very short indies run about the same price. Not like I have to buy my old games again, they still work fine on my PS2.
